Right at the moment, one of the privates of the dragoons burst into the
tent. “SIR!” Heather quickly released Tavington and took a few steps back
standing away from him. Public affection wasn’t exactly something that was
considered polite and was unheard of for those in Colonel Tavington’s station.
William’s jaw clinched, while in his tent with his wife it was as private and
sacred place as a blasted church, what idiot would just come in without
announcing himself.
Tavington turned around and roared furiously at the solider, “How DARE
YOU ENTER MY TENT WITHOUT EVEN CALLING OUT!!!! Have you not heard of knocking,
or announcing yourself then waiting for permission to enter!!!” All the blood
in the private’s face fled, as he turned white as a sheet. It was if he hoped
that the ground would open up and swallow him whole where he stood, as he was
frozen in place nearly shaking with fear. After a moment, all he could do was
conjure up a weak salute, resisting the urge to turn and run out of the tent.
Either this was a new recruit or someone who had seen Colonel Tavington’s
wrath before.
The look in Williams’s eyes and the sound of his voice even made
Heather, “Uh . . sir. . . sir I. . . uh . . .Major Borden . . .” Each word
was full of stutters and it sounded as if his tongue had come loose and would
fall out of his mouth at any moment.
“Out with it SOLIDER!” Colonel Tavington demanded as impatient as
ever with this boy. The young private jumped and all at once his information
flooded past his lips as quickly as he could form words.
“Sir, General Cornwallis is on his way here from his Headquarters. He
will be here in a matter of moments.” Tavington let out an annoyed sigh at
this bit of news. He wasn’t sure exactly what this visit was going to be
about, but he had some idea.
“Is he really.” The private considered his message delivered, and was
so eager to vacated the tent, he forgot to wait to be dismissed. Luckily,
Tavington had more pressing matters to be concerned of. William walked over to
the mirror and started to straighten his uniform. What the perfect end to an
absolutely tedious day. Heather walked a little closer to him starting to panic
on the inside.
“William, what should. . . . . should I . . .” Tavington turned
buttoning the last gold button on his vest.
“You stay here.” Turning he ducked out of the flap of his tent
heading for the edge of the camp. Looking up, he saw where Cornwallis and his
escort had ridden in and had already dismounted. Cornwallis was on his way to
Tavington’s tent when he saw he had already come from it. Tavington saluted
the General before standing at attention. Cornwallis walked up to him having a
very strange look on his face, almost one of pity. “Colonel Tavington.”
“Sir.” “I’m afraid that I bring, tragic news Colonel. Shall we go
inside?” The general turned and began walking towards Tavington’s tent, and
the Colonel quickly turned following after him. Cornwallis began to speak once
more as they walked through the camp. “It would seem that Lady Tavington, your
wife has gone missing.”
William slowed his step as the purpose of this visit was crystal clear,
and they both came to a stop just outside of his tent. Colonel Tavington began
to say something but Cornwallis continued not allowing him to get a word in.
“I assure you, every possible resource we have has been put to work to find
her. I dispatched several patrol units, some infantry and a few of our scouts to
seek her out before the Colonials do.” Still William was trying to get a word
in but Cornwallis would simply not allow it.
“Sir, . . . you do not reali . . .”
“Try not to worry Colonel Tavington, I’m sure she is fine.” With
all of these extreme measures that had been put into place in finding her,
Cornwallis was not going to take it very well when it was discovered that she
was in no danger and had already been found. The General turned ducking into the
door of the tent, and William quickly followed. As Cornwallis looked up, his
eyes met with Heather’s and he froze in place just starring at her.
Tavington stood silently watching and waiting for a response from the
General. Hoping that he wouldn’t take the fact of his acting like a complete
ass to hard.
Cornwallis’s jaw clinched tight, as he stood silent still not saying
anything. Heather smiled at him and curtsied spitefully, never once taking her
eyes off of his. “Good evening General Cornwallis, I hope that you are
well?” Cornwallis’s eyes shifted to William’s, wanting an explanation
immediately.
Tavington took a breath and
gave a bored sigh, “We picked her up on the way back from our patrol along the
Santee on the main road. She had lost her horse and was making her way back to
headquarters on foot.” After everything that had gone on in this war and the
extensive amount of pressure that had been put on the Colonel during the course
of this war, he hardly minded the chance to grind his heels into the General.
Now that they had a sort of ‘agreement’, he had a bit more leeway to press
matters without fear of persecution. Cornwallis’s look just darkened, and he
exited the tent. William looked at Heather a moment, before ducking out of the
tent following after Cornwallis.
As he stepped outside he looked
around to see where the General had gone, finding him standing at the edge of
the camp looking off into the woods, with his hands clinched behind his back. He
was completely furious at the situation and didn’t think it proper to turn
into a raving lunatic in front of his troops, or the woman who was present in
the camp. This wasn’t exactly something Tavington was looking forward too, but
nevertheless, he walked up behind him waiting for whatever Cornwallis had to say
to him.
All at once, the General turned
around in a burst of fury as he walked up to Tavington, “You sir, need to
learn how to control your wife! She is insubordinate, independent, stubborn, and
possibly the most frustrating person I’ve ever had the misfortune to become
involved with. She, speaks her mind whenever she feels like her opinion should
be heard, and she has absolutely no idea who a lady in her station is to conduct
herself.” Tavington was not only a bit shocked at his words; he was rather
insulted and angry that he had said them. Yet he remembered that General
Cornwallis was his commanding officer, and even with the deal that had been
struck between them, his slitting the bastards throat for saying such things
about her would get both himself and his wife beheaded.
“How would you have her be
sir? She is a very intelligent woman, which is one of the many reasons I chose
her to be my wife. I can not ask her to act as if she is ignorant when she is
not. . . ”
Cornwallis raised his voice
cutting him off, “She is far to strong willed Colonel! Her tongue is quick to
speak against certain things and defend others that she does not even
understand. I have spoken of it to her yet she continues to defend her distorted
view of things, that she only knows merely bits and pieces of!”
Tavington had had just about
enough of this, and met the General’s stare strait on. His look was
unwavering, unblinking, and incredibly stern, “Is it wrong for a wife to
defend her husband.” Cornwallis halted his verbal assault having been stopped
frozen. He knew to continue on with this line of argument would only open other
areas that should remained closed.
“That is beside the point
Colonel Tavington.”
“It is the point Sir. Somehow
she has had to misfortune of being informed of everything I do, and much other
unpleasantness that have happened in the field. It is driving her to act a way
that she has never acted before, and she not can be blamed for her wanting to
get away from it for a few hours to find some peace.”
“How dare you address me in
such a way Colonel! Our agreement does not cover your insubordinate acts! I
suggest if you do not wish our deal to be terminated, you remember who you are
and who I am.”
Tavington wanted to reply to
this, but he had other things to worry about besides some petty argument like
this. Cornwallis took a step closer towards him, “You will keep her under
control Colonel.” He ordered. Both men were shooting death glares at each
other. In Tavington’s eyes anger at the insults that just flowed from
Cornwallis’s lips towards his wife, and in Cornwallis’s a look that let the
Colonel know that his life and everything else rested on a word from him to the
King about his actions in the field. Cornwallis walked around him going back to
where his horse and his escort awaited. Tavington turned and watched him walk
away, and a smirk crossed his face.
William was well acquainted
with all the familiar signs of pure jealousy raging out and baring its teeth.
Where as Tavington should have remained upset or have been even more so, a small
victorious smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. This so called scolding that
was supposedly about his wife being completely uncouth and uncooperative was
more of anger that she was Lady Tavington, and didn’t belong to Cornwallis in
any capacity.
No matter how the war turned
out, no matter if Cornwallis was true to his word in their agreement, no matter
how much honor and glory that Cornwallis collected from Tavington’s victories
and claiming them as his own, knowing full well that those very things were what
Tavington needed to replenish his families reputation. In the very simplest and
cliques of terms, William would always be the one who got the girl. And he knew
that burned Cornwallis more then anything else because it was something he had
no control over, and his position couldn’t change it.
Tavington turned and retired back into his tent, Victorious.
