Chapter Eleven - Questions but few answers
“Your brother?” Will took one step back his expression bewildered “he has never
mentioned a sister..”
“Jack likes to keep secrets” Bella’s voice was slightly bitter and she looked
up at Will “surely you of all people have figured that out by now.”
“You are Jack’s sister” he shook his head and Bella frowned at him.
“Yes Jack Sparrow is my brother…and if he finds me here…”she turned beginning
to walk away, Will reached out and caught her hand.
“You are sailing with out his knowledge?” he did not need to hear her answer
her face coloured and her eyes betrayed her guilt. “You play a risky game
then.”
She wrenched her hand away “maybe, but it is none of your concern William Turner”
the words were spat at him.
“Will where are you, we have carousing to attend to?” Jack’s voice the tone
slightly self mocking echoed down the alley and Bella gave a gasp.
“Don’t tell him please…” her eyes were pleading as she looked up at Will “please…I
beg of you.”
He nodded, he did not know why, it was his duty to tell Jack, but she looked so
vulnerable in the half light. His conscience gave him a sharp jab, no sister of
Jack Sparrow would be a wilting daisy, she was likely as wicked as Jack. But
she looked so young and so anxious; he could not help but agree.
“Thank you Will….Good Bye then” her voice was soft and she looked slightly
regretful before she turned and ran.
Bemused Jack watched a slim figure vanish into the shadows. The woman and it
definitely was a woman had seemed familiar to him and he had frowned trying to
place her.
“Sorry mate” he called to Will “didn’t mean to interrupt your little tete a
tete”
He looked closely at Will, who was rubbing a hand through his hair and looked
slightly off balance “old friend was it?”
“No Jack, someone that I thought I had met before but it seems I was mistaken.”
Jack looked at him closely, Turner was obviously not telling him something, he
was familiar with his mannerisms and the boy was a terrible liar. Still
everyone was entitled to their secrets and if there was a lady involved well
Jack could not see the harm in Will keeping her identity close to his chest.
He spun on his heel “the crew has a head start on us mate best we get some rum
before there is naught but dregs.”
“Aye Jack” Will followed his Captain back up the alley and through the tavern
door. A wave of raucous laughter and drunken singing washed over him. He looked
around searching for Anna Maria, she was standing at the bar talking to a young
woman with red hair. As soon as Anna saw Will watching she nudged the other
girl, they exchanged a few brief words and parted Anna going to sit with Gibbs
and the girl taking a chair beside McGuiness – the Captain of the Silver Gull.
“Anna Maria, Gibbs” he sat down at the table, Gibbs gave him one startled
glance, noted his grim face and hastily left.
“Will” her eyes were on the milling crowd and she did not look at him.
“I talked to your friend outside” his tone was conversational but each word was
clipped.
“Oh her” Anna was trying to sound nonchalant but he noticed how tight her hand
was on her glass.
“Yes her, Jack’s sister” the last was almost hissed and Anna’s hand shook
slightly as she raised the rum to her lips.
“You didn’t tell him did you Will, he doesn’t know that she sails, he will be
furious if he finds out.” Her eyes were pleading as she looked up at him.
“I didn’t” he said shortly “as your friend Bella told me, it is not my
concern.”
Anna Maria’s sigh of relief was audible and she patted Will’s arm smiling
widely.
“Don’t be getting too happy there” he leaned back in his chair “if I am to keep
this from Jack I want to know why.”
Anna Maria looked long and hard at Will. He had changed from the young man she
had first met near on five years ago. The soft edges were gone and the man in
front of her was not the gullible boy he had once been. He was a sharp sailor
and a loyal first mate. She would have to be careful here.
“Well” his eyes were full on her’s now and there was a tone of command in his
voice, one that was usually only present when they were under sail. She took a
breath.
“Bella sails without Jack’s knowing” she looked across the room, her Captain
was in the centre of an animated group, he was waving his arms about, obviously
telling the tale of their escape, his audience spellbound.
“I gathered that Anna” Will was tapping his fingers on the table “why?”
“Well Jack don’t want her sailing” she shrugged “he don’t want no one talking
about Bella no more, something happened about the time you was looking for that
Elizabeth and he got all funny about Bella. Moved her and his Mama into hiding.
Since then Bella been almost a prisoner in that old haunted house.”
“So you have known Bella a long time then?”
“We was little children together, I always thought we would both sail on the Pearl” she shook her head
“that’s all I know of it Will, you know Jack, he keeps secrets.”
Will nodded remembering the secrets that Jack had kept from him but his eyes
were shrewd as he glanced over at the man they were discussing.
“Maybe he thinks Bella is in some danger.”
Anna Maria laughed “I don’t think so Will. I think that Jack just don’t want
his little sister running with pirates. I think he wants Bella to be a fine
lady, least that’s what I am thinking. Bella was becoming a pirate so Jack
moved her away. His Mama was a lady afore she married his Daddy and I reckon he
has some grand ideas for Bella.”
Will sat quietly thinking about what Anna had said, it did not ring true. Jack
always felt sorry for the noblewomen saying that they were like caged birds and
he did his utmost in some instances to give them some taste of freedom,
fleeting though it usually was. Will just could not see him confining his
sister that way, unless there was a reason.
He sighed heavily, he thought that Jack trusted him, he certainly trusted Jack,
implicitly. He was sure that the Captain had his reasons but silently Will
admitted that this secrecy about something as important as a sister was
upsetting. For the first time in many years Will felt a sense of unease. What
exactly was Jack up to…

Gasping Bella reached the gangplank, she had a stitch and ran the last with one
hand clutching her side, the man on watch stood, hastily drawing his sword and
stepping forward into the light.
“Is there trouble? Does the Captain need us?”
“No, no trouble Collins, least not for the Captain.”
“So I take it you’re in some sort of bother then lass to be running like that.”
He looked back up the wharf “where is your mate?”
“Tess is alright she is with her father.”
“So who are you running from girl? Should I be on the lookout?”
“No there is nothing you need to worry about.” She brushed past him and made
her way to the bow.
Collins watched her she paced backwards and forwards for several minutes until
she sat perched on the rail, legs over the side staring at the rising tide. He
thought that it would not be long before Tess appeared, the two women tended to
stick together, true to form it was not an hour later that the Captain and his
daughter emerged from the shadows.
“She’s up front” he spoke before Tess could ask, she gave him a smile and made
her way forward.
“Girl done run off and Tess was worried about her” McGuiness was gruff, his
brusqueness meant to indicate that he had not been worried at all. But the
frown disappeared from between his eyes. He knew that it was ridiculous to be
concerned about the female members of his crew, they had chosen this life and
they were aware of the dangers but he could not help but think of his
daughters. It was well known in Tortuga that Angus McGuiness was a gentleman, a
pirate yes but he would never harm a lady or countenance harm to one,
regardless of her background. He looked up at the stars and then over at the
ship with the black sails that rocked on the gentle swell. Sparrow was here, he
had seen the clown in the tavern and overheard that he planned to be in port
for some days. Perhaps it was time to move on, the young women went all cow
eyed over Sparrow and his first mate that young Turner, a broken hearted woman
was a miserable sailing companion.
“We’ll be sailing with the turning tide.”
“Aye Captain” Collins nodded “should I send a runner to the tavern?”
“That might be for the best laddie.”
*
Bella was sitting staring at the lights of the town reflecting on the water
when Tess quietly sat down beside her.
“So what happened?” she asked “Anna Maria was worried that that Will Turner had
gone after you.”
“He did” Bella replied quietly and she told Tess what had happened in the dark
alley.
“Do you think he will tell Jack?”
“I don’t know, I hope not, but I don’t know him and if he thinks that Jack
should know then he will tell him, he is a good first mate, Jack is always
saying that.”
Tess let out a long breath “So what are you going to do?”
“Finish the voyage and then face the music if and when Jack finds out, I just
hope he doesn’t send me away.”
“He wouldn’t do that Bella…would he?.”
“I don’t know what Jack would or would not do anymore Tess; he has changed
these last five years.”
Tess put a hand on Bella’s arm, “You know that you can always sail with us, my
Father likes you.”
“Thanks Tess, I don’t know how I am going to face him, he is going to be angry
and even worse he is going to be disappointed, that I lied to him.”

Will bought his new friend, a scar faced pirate called Nick another tankard of
rum, then clapped him on the shoulder wishing him good sailing. He had the
information that he wanted, he could go now, he moved through the crush waving
at Jack who was chatting with a vivacious redhead.
“Yer not leaving already are you William? You have not even said hello” the
familiar female voice and the firm hand on his arm stopped him, he looked down
in surprise. It was Cassie, formerly of Tortuga, formerly of Selena’s, she had
left to make her fortune if he recalled correctly, he wondered how long she had
been in Petit Goave.
“Cassie how nice to see you” his eyes moved over her “almost all of you.”
She giggled and her tongue flickered across her red painted lips. Her lush
figure was barely contained by a red velvet dress that left her shoulders bare
and dipped deeply between firm breasts that had the fabric straining.
“You wanting some company then Will?” she cooed and batted her eyelashes.
“Thank you Cassie but I have an appointment, perhaps later this evening” he
lightly caressed her shoulder and she smiled a slow smile of anticipation.
“Don’t let your business keep you too long William” she called to his departing
back. He waved and smiled slipping out the door.
