Chapter 11 – The first trial
Ardeth had barely
spoken the words, when a low rumbling filled the small room and the
ground started to shake. Surprised by the sudden movement both Rick
and Ardeth were thrown to the ground. They tried to get up again and
reach out to each other, but the shaking only grew more intense as a
chasm started opening in the middle of the room.
It quickly grew wider
and wider, too far for each of them to reach out towards the other.
While the room was separated into two sides it
also changed it's appearance, the walls turning into solid gold. All
kinds of luxuries suddenly surrounded each of them, cushions
and silken sheets, plates filled with fresh meat and fruit and more
gold and jewelery than they had ever seen
before.
When the rumbling and
shaking had finally stopped Rick looked around himself, confused what
this sudden change was about. If this was one of Sekmet's trials, he
had no idea what she wanted him to do and the only thing he cared for
at the moment anyway was that Ardeth was on the other side of the
huge chasm.
Walking closer to the
edge he saw Ardeth copy his movements, the look of confusion on his
lover's face quite similar to his own
expression. The chasm simply was too wide to jump over it and as far
as he could see, there was no bridge to be found.
“Is this one of the trials?”
his voice echoed in the silent room, magnified by the walls of the
deep rift between them.
“I do not know, Rick. But I
will try to climb over to your side.”
Nodding his agreement
Rick watched as Ardeth carefully climbed over the edge, mindful
of the sharp edges the rocks around him had. He didn't like the
prospect of his lover climbing down there without a rope to keep him
from falling, but there was no other way for him to get to Rick's
side.
He couldn't see them,
but he could imagine the muscles on Ardeth's back tensing as he
climbed downwards, the image sending a pleasant sensation through his
body. Who needed all the luxury and gold
surrounding him, if the one thing he really needed was on the other
side of a large rift?
Ardeth had almost
reached the bottom, when his foot slipped from a small ledge.
Fortunately he managed to hold on to the wall with his hands, while
Rick held his breath for a moment. He had felt sudden panic sweep
through his body in the few seconds that Ardeth needed to find new
footing, memories of the pit in Osiris' temple surfacing again. He
had been so scared for his lover then, even if he had never admitted
it to anyone, not even Ardeth.
Unconsciously
breathing a sigh of relief as Ardeth finally reached the bottom of
the chasm Rick called down, asking him if he was ok. The answer was
positive, while Ardeth focused on the wall on Rick's side of the
room, searching for a grip to begin his ascend towards his lover.
It took about five
minutes before a frustrated yell passed Ardeth's lips. Rick, who had
been pacing on his side, waiting for his lover to climb up to him,
immediately hurried to the edge. “What happened?” Glad
that he had kept the slight note of fear out of his voice that had
appeared at his lover's yell Rick looked down.
Ardeth stood in front
of the wall, accusingly glaring at the stone. If the wall were human
it would most likely have cowered before his lover's gaze, but being
made of stone it didn't move a single millimeter.
“I can't find a hold. The wall
is completely smooth here.”
Shit. His decision made
in a split second Rick turned around and slid over the edge, at the
same time yelling to Ardet, that he was coming down. He suspected
that the Med-jai would have protested had he been given the time, but
now that he was on his way Ardeth fortunately didn't object.
The descend
was rough as sharp rocks dug into his legs and hands. But he wasn't
going to stay up there alone, while his lover was down at the bottom
of a small rift, all by himself. He had already gone down most of the
way, when a sudden problem made itself known.
To climb further he
needed a hold for his feet, but the wall below him was completely
smooth. Cursing his own rashness Rick looked down at Ardeth. It
wasn't that far to the ground and his lover should be strong enough
to catch him.
“Ardeth, I'll jump. Can you catch me?”
As soon as he had seen his lover nod his head Rick let go of the
small ledge his hands had held on to and tumbled downwards. It was a
short fall before he felt Ardeth's hands on his body, firmly holding
him. Ardeth set Rick down to the ground, but he still kept his arms
around his lover, pulling him into a chaste kiss.
“You're crazy.”
Rick would have commented on Ardeth's assessment
of his mind, but before he had a chance to do so a loud, booming
voice echoed through the rift they were standing in. “Sekmet's
chosen, you have completed the first task that has been given to
you.” Huh? They hadn't even been given a task yet, but they had
already completed it? Rick wasn't sure what to think about that, but
he surely wasn't going to complain.
“Only two true Med-jai warriors are worthy of leading my
army. You proved that the dedication you
have for each other is strong enough to overcome all obstacles that
separate you. But there are still six virtues
left, that you have to prove before you may lead the goddess'
army.”
The voice fell silent for a moment, a loud creaking sound filling
the rift as two doorways opened in it's walls. Each of them was made
of gold and hieroglyphics were written
above them. “Now go, my warriors. The time for your tribe has
already begun to run out.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ardeth and Rick both waited patiently, wondering if the voice
would also tell them which way they were supposed to take. But since
silence was the only answer they got Ardeth stepped closer to the
doorways, examining the hieroglyphics above
them.
“Can you read it?” Nodding his head
Ardeth turned to his lover, who had stepped up to him. Before Rick
knew what had happened to him the Med-jai had already captured his
chin in a firm grip and pressed their lips together. His mind was
still reeling from the sudden attack, but his tongue had already
caught up on the action, eagerly tangling with Ardeth's.
Rick would have liked the kiss to go on for longer, but Ardeth
slowly pulled away and started to talk: “We will have to go
separate ways now. The hieroglyphics above
the doorways spell out our names and if I'm not mistaken, that means
that you have got to take this way and I the other.”
He didn't like the idea of being separated in this strange and
likely dangerous place, but Rick agreed since there was no other
choice for them. Placing another quick kiss on Ardeth's lips he
watched as his lover disappeared through the first doorway, that
vanished as soon as he had passed.
Hoping that his lover would be ok Rick walked towards his own
doorway, stepping into the darkness that lay beyond.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as he stepped through the doorway Ardeth heard a heavy
door close right behind him, leaving him only the choice to go
forward. Drawing his sword in preparation for whatever the goddess
would put in his way the Med-jai warrior walked through the dark
hallway, the echo of his footsteps his only
company.
He hoped that Rick would be okay in whatever task the goddess
had set for him, but he was certain that his lover could master it.
He had absolute faith in Rick, having seen the things he was capable
of on more than one occasion.
There was a light in the distance. Slowing his steps until they
were completely inaudible in the silent darkness Ardeth cautiously
approached the light, not knowing what
would await him there. The Med-jai finally reached the end of the
long tunnel, looking at a small round chamber that was very similar
to the first one they had been in. The only two differences
were the small doorway that was blocked by iron bars and the lioness
standing right in the middle of the room.
Her voice sounded very like a purr as she started to speak:
“Ardeth Bay, leader of the Med-jai, I have awaited you. You
proved your devotion, but now you have to
demonstrate the unique strength of the Med-jai, that made them the
guards of the pharaohs in ancient times.”
Ardeth spotted a movement behind the bars of the doorway, but
whatever it was could not be guessed as it hid in the shadows. The
goddess suddenly rose from the ground,
taking a seat on a golden throne that was inserted in one of the
walls, a few feet above the ground. As soon as the lioness' feet had
left the floor the bars started to lift and the movement in the
shadows increased.
The Med-jai warrior still couldn't make out what it was, but the
load roar echoing though the small chamber told him more than he had
wanted to know. A lion. Sending a quick prayer for assistance both to
Allah and to the gods of old Ardeth prepared himself for the fight,
hoping that Rick's task involved something less deadly.
