"Ha!" Geri flipped her opponent over her shoulder, then aimed a punch to her throat.
"Very good, miss Simmons." The coach applauded.
"Tell that to my back." Marie groaned; taking the assist to her feet.
The girls respectively shook hands before going
to take a seat to watch the next sparring pair.
"You're so aggressive today." Marie voiced to her partner. "Did something happen?"
Did it ever. Thought Geri. She could not get those words out of her head. They were haunting. All consuming. But she can't figure out why they hurt so much. Was it how he'd said it or what Mr. Douglas had said? Why does he opinion - - no, not opinion, the word is wrong, it's more his assumption than anything else.
"Mar'... Do.. I seem like I seek approval?" She asked sincerely.
Not expecting to hear that response, Marie gave her friend the kindness and pretended to think about it. "Not at all. Why?"
"My boyfriend's dad accused me of it." She dropped her forehead onto her knees.
"What a jerk! And what an odd thing to say..." she thought that over. "Do you?"
"Do I?"
"Overly do things for his son? Why else would he say something like that?" She shrugged her hand.
'I forgot, she doesn't know.' Geri bites her bottom lip.
"You have a boyfriend? Since when?"
"Um.. It's been about a month and a half now." She forgot the part where no one was supposed to know that. But, she supposed that it was all right to tell that much, since she didn't use Colt's name. "I'll talk to you after class; I'll buy us drinks. Are you free?"
"Dobermans couldn't keep me away, and I'm afraid of dogs."
Geri thanked her, then turned empty attention onto the spar. Was she really going to out herself? What if Marie doesn't take it well? Will she hate her? Will she tell the other girls in class? Will they hate her as well? This was a bad idea. But what can she do to retract it? They can go for drinks, but maybe she can just sway the conversation elsewhere.
Class, thankfully, was in a void that caused it to feel as though it was dragging on. The Gods are either on her side to stall or to aggravate her; sort of like forcing prisoners to take a long walk before they get the chair. By the time they began cleaning up and changing, she knew what she would do. What she would say was another story. It's never an easy thing to say. If it ever becomes easy, she'd like to live in those years and just skip out on the current.
"You ready?" Marie asked cheerfully. Her arm dropped around her friend's shoulder. This was going to be nice; she and Geri have never hung out outside of class; they attend the same school but don't hang out there. They both have their clique. So her eagerness was positively bursting!
Marie looked in heaven while sipping her mint smoothie with the thick chocolate whip topping. However, it wasn't enough to distract from the real reason she's been given such a blissful delight. "So, about this issue?"
Geri sipped her chocolate orange smoothie quietly. Now or never. Removing her lips from around the straw, she sighed. "A while back I had dinner at my boyfriend's house. Everyone was so nice to me, his brothers and parents... But when his dad brought me home, he just went off on me. Telling me to stay away from his son, and, I quote: "find acceptance elsewhere", it hurt so much that I actually cried. I haven't cried in ages, not like that."
"What a creepy guy." She sipped from her drink. "But," she paused from a cough caused by a small splash trying to go the wrong way. "Excuse me, but," she finished her thought. "What did you do, or do you not know?"
Geri fiddled with the straw. "Marie... Do.. Do you know that sometimes a person isn't always. No, that's not right."
Marie waited, her already large eyes looked impossibly big due to curiosity.
"I wasn't born as I am now." Confessed Geri. "My body used to be a boy's." Her hazel gaze dropped to the table. She never liked seeing the scorn. The face haunted every transperson's nightmares. When the silence stretched, she dared to look up. Her peek was met with a brief glance as Marie was searching her with her glances.
"Are you sure?"
Geri blinked in shock of the great compliment. After what Mr. Douglas had said, she thought her boy was showing, like an ugly deformity. Or a scar. That's sure what it felt like to her. And she still has the deformity tucked away in lock-up. She nodded like a creaky rocking chair, a sway of head rather than a sharp movement.
"But you're so pretty."
Geri laughed so suddenly it startled the other patrons around them. But her sudden burst of glee turned into tears, and rather than laugh, she was now sobbing. It sounded like she had the hiccups. Marie got out of her seat and wrapped her arms around her friend.
"Nooo. No, no, no, why are you crying? Was I wrong to call you pretty? Are you insulted?"
Geri shook her head rapidly. Wiping her tears, she smiled kindly at her friend. "I'm sorry. It was just sweet of you to say; I've been feeling really gross since that day." She chuckled.
"It's all right, we all have those days," she returned to her seat. "Letting assholes influence our outlook on life or ourselves." She sipped her drink. "We will never all agree with the same things."
Geri nodded. She had forgotten that in the face of harsh judgement and demands. She's allowed someone's poor opinion to give her doubt in herself. It didn't take long to accept who she was in life, she knows others need more time. No need to get mad.
"I haven't told many people. I just don't feel it's necessary to go through life introducing myself as who I'm not first."
Marie nodded. "And you shouldn't have to." She held her friend's hand. "I can't believe your boyfriend's dad could be such a dick."
Geri agreed. "But he was nice earlier. I wonder how he could tell?"
Marie looked over her friend. "Hmm... I don't have a clue myself." She finished her drink. "Did you know the family beforehand?"
"Kinda yes, kinda no. Not so much that I was a constant." She stirred her drink with the straw. "I was at my boyfriend's birthday party. Just one, my family moved before I hit fourth grade."
"Oh." Marie was quiet. "Geri, are you gonna be ok?"
"You know, at first I wasn't sure. But, after talking to you.. I am." She smiled.
"Good! Don't give him your joy to screw around with."
"Right!"
"Yeah!"
The two girls laughed merrily. But they quickly sober.
"Ger', thanks for telling me."
"Thanks for understanding that I don't want you to tell the other girls in class." Her eyes plead for discretion. She may be comfortable telling people one day, but as was stated, she'd rather just not. She wants to live her life as Geri, not her birth existence.
"I really don't think the other girls will care, but I won't say anything."
"Not even by accident to feel out people's thoughts?" She assessed her friend's gossip stability.
"It's not business to tell." Seeing the look, she sighed. "And I swear, not even to feel them out, will I say anything."
"Thank you." Appetite restored, she finished her smoothie as well.
Geri and Marie exited the shop full and enlightened.
At the Douglas house.
Colt finished unloading the dishes then he stuffed in the dirty ones from earlier and lunch. He was just about to shout obscenities when he saw his girlfriend hurrying up the driveway. He grinned from ear to ear, and rushed to the door, pulling it open before she could get a chance to knock or ring the bell.
"Psychic connection, I like that." She said to his aggressive knowledge that she'd showed up. Her arms wrapped around his neck, she leaned into him, kissing him sweetly upon the lips.
Colt hummed his enjoyment of the exchanged greeting, deepening the kiss while giving her a little lift off her feet. It's only been a few days, but he missed it like summer at his grandfather's cabin. Her presence was warm and inviting. Lately things at home have been cold and silent, most of the time, mostly when his father was home.
It was hard to say if everyone was on his side by not speaking to him, or if they were all uncomfortable and decidedly staying out of it. Either way, old pop must be feeling the sting. Maybe even just a little.
"I'm glad you're here," he exclaimed. "Wanna go do something?"
Geri sucked in a breath; her hazel gaze swept past her boyfriend to farther inside the home. "Is your dad home?"
"Umm, no. But he'll be back in the early evening, like five… Why?" He pulled the door closed before the swarming gnats or flies could realize it was open for business. He felt more privacy while outside, anyone in the house could have been eavesdropping on them.
"I wanna talk to him." She caressed his cheeks, kissing him on the lips again when he leaned into her touch with his eyes closed.
"Why?"
"Because."
Colt figured that was a good enough explanation for him. Why question it? He's certainly not concerned about his father's feelings. He doesn't seem to mind hurting others, himself included, so why should he spare him whatever chew out he's about to receive.
"Well, it's three-something now. How 'bout until he's back, let's go do something - - I missed you."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. PC Arcade, Youth Center," he tossed out some suggestions. "We could go around throwing lemonade filled water balloons at people, I don't care." Holding her hands, he looked into her eyes. "As long as we're doing it together, I'm in."
Teasing him, she twisted her lips back and forth. "Hmmm… I think you might be too into me." She grinned. "I might just go somewhere else."
"Oh, zip-it." He yanked her into the house, but through it to the backyard.
Rocky spied the top of his brother's head through the window, for a moment it was thought Colt was alone but then a patch of auburn came into view. Figuring they made up, he fixed himself a glass of cranberry juice then returned to his bedroom.
Oh the scandal of it all, the two of them kissing feverishly on the covered chair swing. Their time apart left them starved for couples' affection. Even as they engaged in heated kisses, they would pause just to hold onto each other.
"No really… let's go do something before we traumatize the Peeping Tom next door." Colt looked up at the window of a neighboring home where a six year old boy was spying on them.
"Ok. Like what?"
Colt snickered. "We had this conversation before." He stroked his fingers through her hair. "Wanna play Switch?"
"What game?"
"Umm… Sports?"
"You're on." She got up from his lap then headed for the back door. "No practice rounds."
"We're betting for what now?"
"Umm… Loser buys the winner.." She racked her brain.
"A wish. Anything the winner wants."
"Anything?" Her brows rose.
He mouthed "Anything" then kissed her on the nose. Holding the door open, he followed her inside, but paused to stick his tongue out at the brat in the window who ducked down when he saw that he was again spotted.
It was a fierce battle of first to three overall, but they each chose a 2 categories for competition. Tum Tum, who was through hanging out with his friends for the day, came home and watched; he became a commentator on the sidelines.
"The winner of swordplay was obvious from the start," commentator reported. "Yes, Colt has been at it since he was a singular digit." He answered himself with. "Is that right?"
Colt and Geri looked at each other, wondering when the interloper had showed up. When he first came in, he had said "hello" but then he headed straight into the kitchen for a snack. They assumed he'd stayed.
"Let's get some word from our players. Geri, now you are new to this sport?" He held out an invisible microphone.
Playing along, she spoke into it. "It's tough, I'll admit, but, he's got a weak left block. I think I can get in there somehow."
Tum Tum smiled. He was happy to be included. "Douglas, you didn't go easy on her. Are you hardcore into winning?"
"Well, when there's a wish on the line, one tends to go in." He shrugged his hand. "But, uh, she fought a good game. Maybe in several years she can hold a candle to someone." He laughed merrily when a swarm of pokes came his way from appointed lousy swordsman. "Stop it, ya crazy." He removed the strap from his wrist. "You guys can play something; gotta pee."
The younger Douglas eagerly took the joy-con. "Volley?"
"Sure."
After a time the front door opened, and in walked Sam Douglas with a large box that's holding smaller containers. He picked up Chinese take-out as per request from his wife over the phone. It was a happy sight to walk in on. Jessica was folding laundry, now and then looking at the television, smiling. The kids were playing a game together. It was then that he counted four heads rather than three.
Clearing his throat, he muttered. "Hello, everyone."
"Hey, dad," chirped Rocky and Tum Tum without looking away from the screen. Colt and Geri said nothing, though they did glance in his general direction as if to say "what of it"?
Sam was followed into the kitchen by his wife who helped him to unpack dinner.
"What is he doing here? I thought we've been through this?" He hissed.
"She's perfectly welcome in our home, Sam. And I've been around the entire time. They've only been behaving as friends - - or will we deny her that much as well?"
Seeing the spirited hissing match going on in the kitchen, Geri set down her controller. Now or never. "I'll be back to say goodbye."
Colt held her shoulder. "You don't have to."
Geri nodded. "Yeah, I kinda do." She patted his hand.
The brothers watched from the living room. There was going to be an explosion. But whom would be the bigger bomb?
Sam looked past his wife at the approaching teen. "Geri." He clipped like it was a joke.
"Yes. Geri." She was about to knot her fingers together, but balling her hands into fist, she held her bravery. He's not a monster because he says nasty things. He's nothing to be afraid of. "I don't like what you said to me, Mr. Douglas. It was thoughtless and needlessly cruel. I don't want to be a girl because of some boy I like, I'm a girl because that's how I was born to me." No tears. No swearing. No tone more stern than is necessary. Keep going. "If that bothers you, you'll live. But I might." She let that hang in the air for a second then pressed on. "I might not because of people like you. Get to know me. I'm not a freak." She shrugged her shoulders as if that was so obvious, yet it had to be said. "That's how it works. So before you start teaching, learn something first."
Sam sighed in agitation, but his wife stepped down onto his toe silencing whatever was going to come out of his mouth.
"And I'm going to continue dating Colt, because he wants to date me. It's that simple." She let out her nerves in a breath. "I don't need anyone's acceptance, least of all from those who want to judge me unfairly." She spun on her heels and marched through the living room to the door.
"Hang on," Colt followed.
"I'll see you at school." She said in a more cheerful tone. Though her legs were noodles.
"Yeah. But, hey," he hugged her tightly. "You were great back there."
"Was I?" She snickered quietly. "I felt a little foolish, ranting on like that. I always thought, I know how things will go in life, I won't be that person. But... Your dad is a hard man to get to know."
"Tell me about it." He backed from the hug. "Hopefully something you said got through to that numbskull,"
Geri shook her head. "Don't feel you have to be mean to family on my behalf. I promised myself I wouldn't be that girl either."
"Speaking of promises,"
"Here it comes."
"I did beat you best of three. I want my wish."
"And your wish is?"
Colt took her hand. "You inspired me. So, instead of wishing for something dirty," he smiled at her chuckle. "I want to tell everyone at school we're dating."
"Are you nuts?" She inquired sincerely. She only just got through telling Marie not to say anything, but now she's going to out herself to the whole school - - well, the Sophomores anyway.
"Yes. I thought you knew that when we started dating," he teased. "Geri... you said you don't need anyone's acceptance. You don't. Not with being a girl, and not for dating. You should be treated like anyone else, and everyone else just dates. Ypu're not outing yourself, you're outing us as a couple."
He has a point. And sure, the gossip with change that from Colt and Geri are dating to Geri used to be a guy, to Colt is dating a guy. Oh the flood of problems could drown, at the very least it'll rough-house a person to critical state.
"I have to get used to it, even though I shouldn't have to. I know that it's something that I do." Sucking in a breath. "Badass flaunt?"
"All-in." He grinned. "I'll see you at school."
"Yup."
He kissed her goodbye, and watched her ride off until she disappeared.
