Terror Incognita
Aislinn was sitting by the window watching the moonlight reflect off the
water in silence with her head resting on her folded arms. There was a lot she
had to think about, and her mind was reeling with everything that had happened.
She sighed a little feeling like she was trapped with no place to turn, and no
answers to be had to the questions she had.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed.” She heard the admiral’s voice say. Her
eyes went wide and she instantly snapped up to her feet, quickly finding her
nightgown and undressing as fast as she could not realizing she was supposed to
be in bed. James sighed seeing her reaction and walked over placing his hand on
her shoulder. Quietly his hand insisted that she stop her movements, gentle in
his insistence. “In two weeks we’ll be arriving in Port Royal. Things will
be different. The people you’ll be around will be different. You don’t have
very much time left to figure out acceptable behavior. But I think you already
know what it is, don’t you.”
Aislinn nodded a little as her eyes turned downwards. “You are a quick
study Aislinn. You’re also very independent in your thinking. However your not
in any sort of position to try breaking down the barriers of class and propriety
. . . especially not as the Admiral’s wife. Understand?” She nodded once
more.
James sighed, “It’s not that I want you to simply throw away your
personality and become someone completely different then you are. I do, however,
want you to learn how to properly conduct yourself in a manner befitting your
station in life. You cannot simply step in and out of it whenever you’d like
or whenever it suits you. It reflects badly on me and on you.”
Aislinn listened keeping her head down and her eyes lowered. Norrington
removed his hat and wig putting them down taking off his neckerchief and putting
them aside. “Lets not discuss this matter anymore. Simply remember what I have
told you and abide by it.”
“Yes sir.” She said softly keeping her back turned to him. James sat
down pulling off his boots waving his hand indicating that she should finish
getting ready for bed as well. Aislinn quickly went back to work taking off her
clothing and slipping into her nightgown at fast as she could move.
James looked over a few things he had jotted down in his journal during
the day before closing the book and his pot of ink blowing out the candle on his
desk. He turned around and stopped arching a brow. He’d come to find Aislinn
had made her bed elsewhere. An uncomfortable looking elsewhere at that. Sitting
in the chair by the window, she curled up into it and pulled a small blanket
over her to settle in for the night.
The Admiral crossed his arms over his chest and strolled towards her a
bit pausing before her. “Aislinn . . . what are you doing?” He asked. She
had the blanket pulled up to her chin and she was trying to act as though she
had already fallen asleep and couldn’t hear him. Yet she didn’t seem to be
fooling him in the least bit. “It’s not working.” He said after a moment.
When he said that she scrunched down in the chair more pulling the blanket over
her head.
Norrington walked over to the chair and squatted down in front of it so
he was more at her level looking up at the bundle of blanket. Reaching up, he
pulled it away from her face. “I believe this road has been traveled before,
Aislinn. You know your place is in my bed at my side. You cannot hide from
me.” His voice was not mean, vicious, vindictive, or commanding. He was simply
reminding her. It was obvious she was still upset recalling her actions while
she was under the influence of the strong spirits she had ingested.
“It would be more comfortable for you if you had more room.” She said
softly. “It’s such a small bed and I take up so much space. It’s simply
not fair to you.” She said hoping that her argument would have some sway to
let her keep her attempt at the distance she wanted.
He looked at her for a moment before speaking, “There was nothing wrong
with your initiating intimacy between us, Aislinn.” He face seemed to turn
pale at his out right words and then flush red as her eyes quickly turned away.
“It was the proper time, and the place, and I am your husband. I rather
enjoyed myself, and I believe that you did too. I’d like to encourage your
initiating such intimacies whenever you’d like actually.”
Aislinn looked as though she was wishing for the bowels of the ship to
open up and swallow her whole as she covered her face with her hands simply
wanting to die right then and there. He half smiled reaching up taking her hands
away from her face, “Aislinn . . . really. You’ve nothing to be ashamed of.
You enjoyed yourself and there was nothing wrong with that. I’m not the sort
of man whose going to be intimidated by his wife having her own appetite for
physical pleasure. Just as long as she feasts upon me and no one else that
is.”
The look on Aislinn’s face was pure and utter horror as her jaw seemed
to drop hearing his words. He was being very blunt and speaking outright about a
subject that she’d rather pretend didn’t exist most of the time.
“James!” She said in almost a whisper as her eyes shifted from left to right
as though every ear in the ship were pressed against the walls listening to
them.
“The door is bolted and no one is listening.” He said refusing to let
her have an exit or to let her back out of their conversation. “So lets have
it, right now.” He said standing and walking over to the bed sitting down and
leaning back against the wall sense it was the only other place in the room to
sit. He looked at her crossing his arms. “Come on, out with it. This is your
chance. What is it that makes you so uncomfortable.” Aislinn looked at him not
understanding what he was talking about.
James thought a moment as to how to clarify what he was saying.
“Anything that you think would help you with your overwhelming inhibitions,
you have my permission to attempt.” He said looking at her crossing his arms.
“Anything at all.”
Aislinn looked very unsure of the situation for several moments but she
knew well enough by now when he was set about something and when there was no
turning back from a situation. Pushing her blanket away, she stood from the
chair and walked past him to their clothing.
Norrington watched her as she moved, and his curiosity was sparked when
she walked back to him carrying with her a white scarf. Aislinn crawled up on
the bed beside him as she folded the scarf over a few times. Then her soft hands
took it up as she looked at James, and she carefully wrapped it around his eyes
covering them tying the scarf in the back. Not to tight, just gently and enough
so that it wouldn’t fall off. The admiral hadn’t been expecting this. Even
though it stole his ability to see, it seemed to give him a clear view of what
it was that caused her the most nervousness.
The young woman’s soft small hands fixed the scarf over his face to
make sure that his eyes were completely covered. They came to rest at either
side of his face and she placed a gentle kiss to his lips. Norrington let his
hands stay at his sides, letting her have complete and utter control at the
moment. Simply returning any kiss she gave him.
Her hands moved to his shirt as she unlaced the ties and reached down
pulling it up over his head tossing it to the side. Her warm hands gently rested
on his chest caressing his skin as she kissed him again. Norrington found this
game rather intriguing and extremely arousing. Reaching out carefully, his own
hands found her body as he pulled her closer returning her kiss. There was
something so alluring about not being able to see her, about having to feel his
way. At the same time, he found that it was his turn, his turn to trust her.
James started to kiss her again, but he felt her pull away. His first
instinct was to go after her but he stopped feeling her take his hand to
reassure him she was still there. A moment passed by before he felt her lips
caressing his once more. When his hands found her body once more, he could feel
her bare skin. She’d removed her nightgown, that must have been the pause.
A smile swept the Admiral’s face feeling the way she seemed so
comfortable with touching him like this. She seemed less intimidated this way,
much more free. He could feel the loving way her hands caressed him, and
anxiously wanted to make him feel safe. James could feel all the care and
compassion that she held inside of her with each gentle touch with each soft
caress. It was intoxicating.
As they kissed in each other’s embrace, Norrington lay down beneath
Aislinn feeling the way she was easing him in that direction. James felt her
hand rest against his face as she kissed him lovingly. When she pulled away, he
leaned up starting to flow after her, rather enjoying the feel of her kiss not
quite ready for the end of it yet, but he paused and lay back. It was her time.
The blindfold kept him at a disadvantage but he quickly realized that perhaps it
was more of a pleasure then a burden.
Norrington lay next to Aislinn watching her sleep, stroking her hair ever
so gently. His mind was running over so many things that had occurred during the
past few months, to mention everything that he had learned. There was still so
much he didn’t know about the young woman he was lying beside. “Forgive me
my weakness.” He whispered with a small smile realizing just how privileged he
was. Ever so softly he placed a kiss on her lips before settling back to watch
her a while longer. “I want this to last.”
Norrington sighed as he stood next to Aislinn on the deck with the
Captain and two other officers at the ladder. “Aislinn . . . we’ve been on
this ship over four months . . . you haven’t drown. We’ve been to shore 5
times, to and from on shore leave 5 times. Will you please climb down the ladder
and get into the boat.” He said trying not to be to embarrassed.
“James . . . why aren’t we next to the dock? The other times we’ve
been at the dock. Never have we had to get into a small boat this far away from
the shore. Why must we do this now?” She questioned in great protest.
“We are not shallow enough on the draft to get that close to the dock.
This is the closest that the ship may go, we have to go the rest of the way in
the long boat. Every one else can swim should the worst happen and we fall over
but that is a moot point since we won’t. Now please . . . into the boat.” He
instructed taking her arm. However Aislinn pulled back.
Norrington sighed in frustration. The Captain decided to make an attempt
at it and stepped forward, “Lady Norrington. I assure you that nothing of that
sort will happen. Every last man in that boat is a seasoned Marine and none of
them want to get their uniforms wet. It’s not at all an easy task to get them
back into proper shape for inspection.”
“Accidents happen, Captain.” Aislinn said her eyes wide.
“Aislinn.” Norrington said to quiet her.
The Captain smiled, “It’s alright Admiral. She’s right. They do
happen. Yet I assure you Lady Norrington . . . once your ashore I doubt very
much that you’ll have to set foot on another ship or in another boat for quite
sometime. Am I correct in that assumption Admiral?”
“Yes. We’re going to be stationed here for years to come.”
“So you see M’Lady. It would be better to simply get it over with and
go ashore. For if you stay aboard, we shall be departing before the week is over
and it would only mean you would be going to sea again.” Aislinn frowned as
she looked at him. That didn’t seem like it would be an option at all. She
closed her eyes and sighed feeling like she was going to cry.
Norrington looked at her having a feeling that did the trick. “Shall we
go then?” Aislinn bit her lip and wrapped her arm around his with a death
grip. “Alright then. I have a feeling you’ve had enough sea air as it is.
You’ve not been looking well these past few days.”
Once they reached the dock, the Admiral stepped out first and then turned
around taking Aislinn’s hands as he helped her out of the boat. “See? All
that fuss and not even a single drop of water.” He said helping her straighten
her cloak. When she stood however she swayed slightly. Norrington reached out
quickly and steadied her with a frown, “Are you alright?” He questioned.
Aislinn nodded, “Yes.” She said quickly standing to her feet as she
finished smoothing out her dress. James looked at her noting that she was a bit
pale. No doubt it was because she had let herself become so afraid about the
water and possibly falling in, she’d scared herself half to death.
Not to mention she hadn’t exactly been eating very much nor sleeping
very well. She seemed so tired this past week and she had large black circles
around her eyes. James thought it rude to say anything but he had noticed. All
he could think of was that she was nervous about their arrival at his new post,
and all the new people she would meet. After all, being locked away in a convent
and let out for the first time on her wedding day would put anyone in the
recluse classification. Meeting new people would cause someone like that a bit
of anxiety.
“I’m glad to see you made it alright Admiral Norrington, we were
beginning to wonder.” James and Aislinn looked up to see Mr. Mercer standing
at the end of the dock. Norrington arched a brow recognizing the man instantly.
He half smiled out of courtesy more then anything else. His distaste for Lord
Becket was at least double, if not more, for his henchmen Mr. Mercer.
“As much as I’m sure the East India Company would like it to be
possible, I don’t control the Weather Mr. Mercer.” James replied.
“Of course not.” Mr. Mercer said as he walked towards the Admiral,
“That’s not our arrangement with you. That’s an arrangement with someone
else.” His eyes shifted towards Aislinn. Not that James wanted to introduce
them, but it was the polite thing to do.
“Aislinn, this is Mr. Mercer, he works for the East India trading
company and is an Employee of Lord Beckett.” He looked at Mercer, “This is
my wife, Aislinn Norrington.”
“It’s a pleasure M’Lady. I trust your voyage wasn’t to
traumatic.” Norrington shot him a look for that comment but Mercer seemed not
to acknowledge it. The man then shifted his attention back to the Admiral.
“Lord Beckett would like to see you in his office. He would have liked
to meet you here at the docks personally except affairs of business came up that
needed immediate attention.”
“I’m sure they did.” James said. Mercer turned to show them the
way, as Norrington offered Aislinn his arm and escorted her along.
Mercer led Aislinn and James in Beckett’s office where they were left
to wait nearly an hour while Lord Beckett attended to some matter that seemed
rather trivial to James. At least it seemed like something that could have
waited until after Beckett had made known whatever it was he wanted with James
and Aislinn so they could settle in to their new home.
Finally, Beckett sent away the other matter and smiled as he walked over
to the couple with a smile. “Sorry about that, you know how it is with
incompetent subordinates James. It seems you would have to go to the ends of the
earth to find good help these days.” Lord Beckett turned to Aislinn and took
her hand, “Lady Norrington, how wonderful to see you again! You’re looking
as charming as ever.”
Aislinn smiled but didn’t say anything. Beckett’s attention turned
back to Norrington, “I trust that your trip wasn’t to bad. I know storm
season isn’t always the best time to travel on the seas but we did need you
straight away.”
“We didn’t have to much trouble. A dry spell for wind here and there
but nothing to severe.” James commented.
“Good, good. Well, I supposed that the two of you are anxious to settle
in so I’ll make this brief.” He motioned for James to follow him to the
giant map that was painted on the wall and started to show him where the main
trouble was and where he would be patrolling asking him what ships and
provisions he would need and what sort of plan he would begin with.
James threw out a few suggestions here and there but he decided that he
wouldn’t know for sure until he had at least one good patrol to start with to
survey the depth of the situation. However, their conversation was cut short
when the sound of a thud distracted them. Both men turned to see Aislinn laying
on the floor, having fallen completely unconscious. They rushed over and kneeled
down beside her, “Aislinn? Aislinn are you alright?” James said as he rolled
her over onto her back supporting her head so it wouldn’t slam against the
floor.
“I’ll send for our doctor.” Beckett said as he went to the door
ordering a guard to fetch their surgeon. Beckett came back seeing if James had
managed to wake her. “Is she prone to this sort of thing?” He asked.
“No . . . no she’s never done this before.” James said looking down
at her, “Aislinn, can you hear me?” he said touching her face. Her face was
white and cold but her skin was covered in sweat.
“Here, lay her on the sofa.” Lord Beckett directed. James quickly
moved sweeping her up in his arms as he took her over laying her down. There was
a pool of blood left behind where she had fallen.
