Honeymoon’s Over
The shit hit the fan three days later. Cora walked out to the main room, holding
Dwayne’s hand, fingers twining. There,
on the couch in the middle of the cave, was Star. Not only Star, but Laddie, too.
“What the FUCK is this?”
Cora was standing in front of David so fast that her movements couldn’t
be tracked.
“What does it look like, Cora?” His pompous mouth smirked at her.
“It looks like you’ve got a fuckin’ death wish. WHAT are you doing? Bringing her here? Have you lost your goddamned mind? You know what comes at her heels.” She jabbed a finger into his chest. David looked over her head to Dwayne.
“You wanna get a hold of your woman?” Cora saw red.
“A hold of his woman? I’ll…” Her building
tirade was muffled by Dwayne’s hand over her mouth, his other arm grabbing her
around the stomach. He dragged her out
of the cave, literally kicking and screaming, as Marko and Paul each grabbed
onto her lethal legs. They walked her
up to where the bikes were parked to give her some time to cool off. She bit into Dwayne’s hand none too
gently. He yelped, almost dropping her.
“Jesus Christ, Cora!!
Would you calm down for a sec?”
Dwayne was bleeding, leaving bloody handprints on her as the three of
them righted her.
“Calm down? You want
me to calm down? She’s… she’ll…
FUCK! You know. All three of you know what she is. What’ll she’ll do.”
“Yeah, we do. But
David thought…” Cora cut Paul off.
“David thought?
David thought what? That he can
control her? That’ll be different? It won’t happen like I’ve seen it? I don’t believe this.” Cora threw up her hands.
“No, he believes it’ll go down exactly like you saw.” Marko turned to her. Dwayne still held her against him. He wasn’t sure if it was to comfort her, or
to keep her from killing his brothers, or Star.
“What… what…” She
sputtered, completely taken aback. She
sunk into Dwayne’s hard body.
“Listen Cora… what you’ve seen, what you’ve shared with us…
it leaves a lot open for… interpretation.”
“Interpretation? I…
I don’t understand?”
“I know. That’s what
we’re trying to tell you, babe.”
Dwayne’s whisper in her ear, plus the scent of his blood all over her,
sent shivers down her spine. She took a
steadying breath.
“Okay. I’ll
bite. What’s open for interpretation? And what interpretation might that be?” Her words were curt, like a precocious
schoolgirl.
“Well… you know David’s mind-fuck thing?” Marko went on when her face screwed up,
expressing her distaste. “Well, we all…
we all have abilities, Cora. Mind
control, memory tampering, that sort of thing.” Paul took over.
“What he’s so eloquently saying is that what you’ve
seen is just that. What you see,
and not what is.” Cora shook her
head, still not quite grasping, or not wanting to grasp, the idea they were
floating. Dwayne’s hand had quit bleeding
and he ran it over her hair, soothing.
“Like a big mirage, babe.
We make them see what we want them to, to push them to do what we want
them to, without actually ‘controlling’ their minds.”
“A big fake out.
God, I’ve always wanted to be an actor…”
“Shut your fuckin’ pie hole, Pauly.” Dwayne turned her toward him, putting his
hands on her face. “We’re gonna let
this whole thing play out. At least
make it look like it’s all playing out.”
“Why? Why take the
chance that… wait… Max. This is about Max,
isn’t it?” The way they all avoided her
eyes told her she was spot on. “I don’t
believe this… Dwayne, you can…” She stopped before she said anything else,
turning back around, resting her arms over his. Cora shook her head. “And
you knew.” She said to all three of
them, but meant it for Dwayne. “You
knew what he’s been up to and didn’t tell me?”
“I didn’t know he was planning anything until last night,
when I saw him with her.” He kissed the
top of her head. “I’ve been a little
distracted lately.”
“And hell if he tells us anything. We’re just along for the ride.”
Paul always knew how to break the tension.
“Okay. So what
happens now?”
“Well, we’re the ‘Lost Boys,’ right? Lets ride!”
**********
She tried, she really did.
But Cora couldn’t get along with Star.
Her spaced out, hippy/gypsy thing got on her last nerve. Cora watched from her perch on Dwayne’s bike
as Star pranced off, Laddie in tow. She
did like the kid, though. He was as
sharp and witty as Star was dull and vapid.
Felt bad about having to fuck with his head, too.
There was a concert on the beach tonight. It was free, so why not, right? Well, it’s sucked, that’s why not. Leaving Star on her own, the four Boys and
Cora rode over to Max’s Video. Just
getting near the place made Cora’s skin crawl.
They walked into the store, not really planning on anything, but really just to
annoy the bastard.
The bell on the door tinkled and Max lifted his head. David locked eyes with him, having some kind
of mental pissing match. Max looked
away first. They circled the
counter. Thorn, Max’s ‘guard’ dog,
growled at them. Cora lifted the corner of her top lip and snarled back. The dog
stopped, whimpered and cocked his head, like dogs do when they don’t understand
when the fun little birdy won’t play anymore.
Paul, ever the flirt, talked to the giggling girl behind the
counter. She seemed cool, for a human. What the hell? I was human until a month ago.
Cora shrugged as she saw Mrs. Lucy Emmerson. Sorry, Ms. Emmerson. She’s divorced now. Dwayne chuckled as he listened to her inner
dialogue.
“I thought I told you not to come in here.” Max’s voice was like nails on a
chalkboard. Harsh. But, I may be a bit biased. David and Max had another stare-down. Boring!
Her voice was sing-songy even in her own head. Dwayne couldn’t help but smile. Max saw him, shocked. He’d never seen the vampire smile. Never.
As they walked out to the tinkling of the bell, Cora heard Lucy speak to
Max. She cringed when she heard him
speak again.
Moving the bikes out of site from the video store, they sat
just inside the invisible line that demarcated ‘townie’ from ‘tourist’. The five of them joked around for about an
hour, before she came back.
Bouncing over the boards, Star got on the back of David’s bike. God!
It’s called ‘conditioner’. Holy
hell. All four of the Boys just
about choked, as Cora broadcast the thought.
Pauly grabbed Laddie as everyone looked to the left.
Michael. Staring
like he’s zoned out on the Frogs' stash.
Or Star’s, for that matter. His
fashion-victim brother teased him.
“Looks like she stiffed ya, bud.”
David sent him a scathing smirk, and they were off, leaving the boards
in the dust.
**********
“UUURRRGG!” Cora really,
really couldn’t stand Star. At
least she was alone with Dwayne, walking the boards. He was a sympathetic ear, since he could barely cover his disdain
for the flake. And they hadn’t had any
quality alone time since her arrival.
Well, they did when they were in bed.
But, that’s beside the point.
“I sooo don’t want to go meet them.” Her.
“I know, me too. But
we have to.” Dwayne wrapped his arm
around her shoulders.
Cora and Dwayne got to the bikes just as Pauly and Marko
did. David hadn’t left, so he was
already there. Watching. Waiting.
“Michael. I like
Michael.” Star’s voice floated over to
them. David started his bike, not even
waiting for the rest of them.
“Let’s get something to eat.”
“Okay.” Star started
to get on behind Michael.
“Where ya goin’, Star?”
The edge in David’s voice cutting through the air as he came to a stop
beside her.
“Nowhere.” Star
ducked her head like a bad puppy. The
other three bikes pulled in, Paul and Marko flanking David, and Dwayne and Cora
blocking Michael’s exit.
“Let’s go.” Michael
held out his hand, again. Boy just
didn’t know when to quit.
“Star…” David
rumbled as if to a lover. Sheyah
right! I don’t think he actually likes
her anymore than the rest of us do.
Paul joked as he situated Laddie behind him. Star obeyed his silent demand like a good puppet.
“You know where Hudson’s Bluff is, overlooking the
point?” Here we go…Yippy kiyae!
“I can’t beat your bike.”
Damn right, not with that piece of shit.
“You don’t have to beat me.
You just have to try and keep up.”
Yeah, and your little dog too.
The Boys snickered at Cora’s running commentary. She was really getting the hang of this
mental communication thing. Practice
makes perfect, and did she ever.
And they were off.
Down the stairs and out onto the sand.
They flew through parties, dodging people at full speed. Jumping over fires, and howling to the
moon. We’re vampires, you ass. Not werewolves. Dwayne threw his head back and laughed. He loved how this woman, his woman would
stand toe to toe with any of them. That
took balls. And she had a huge
pair. They ducked their heads as they
passed under low branches in the woods.
Almost there.
The bluff loomed ahead and Dwayne, Paul and Marko pulled
back, leaving Michael and David in a chicken fight. Michael flinched first and dumped his bike, sliding to the edge
of the cliff.
“NO!” Star’s voice
rang out as Michael swung at David’s face, connecting.
“What the hell are you doing? You! Come on! Just you!” Fuckin’ pussy. Doesn’t want to fight all of us. Paul’s voice laughed through their heads.
“How far you willin’ to go, Michael?” Cora just rolled her eyes, turning to head
down the stairs.
She listened to David recite the story of how they claimed
the cave. Shit gets better every
time he tells it. Marko joined in
the colored commentary that had been going on all night.
“So, whaddya think, Mikey?”
Paul joked and turned on the stereo as David sent Marko for
Chinese. Things were starting to pick
up. Time to rock and roll, boys.
“Oh, I love this song. Turn it up!” Cora started
dancing and singing along as Crazytown’s “Butterfly” played. Paul joined her, bumping and grinding. Dwayne growled a warning. She turned to Dwayne, holding out her hand… “Come
and dance wit’ me, so come and dance wit’ me”… He did. Grabbing her hips, he pulled her to him,
moving and swaying to the beat. She was
shocked. She didn’t know he could
dance, move like that. Well, she knew
he could from all their bed play. She
just didn’t know he could do it while vertical. Grabbing his arm with one hand and wrapping the other around his
neck, she matched his every move. The
only thing David, Paul, Star, Michael, and Laddie could do was watch,
transfixed.
The song ended, but the beat remained, blending into “#1
Crush” by Garbage. The heat between
them radiated out, scorching the bystanders.
Cora pushed Dwayne down on the couch.
Singing to him, feeling every word, she writhed on him. An impromptu lap dance… “I will crawl on
hands and knees until you see, you’re just like me…you will believe in me, and
I can never be ignored… I would die for you”… The song ended, blending into the next one, but neither Cora nor
Dwayne knew what it was, or even cared.
They were wrapped up in each other, rubbing all over and sucking each
other’s tongues.
“Pay no mind to them.
They do that all the time.” Paul
smirked at the obviously uncomfortable Michael. David actually laughed, causing Star’s head to snap up. She’d never heard him laugh before. That’s just because you’re here. He laughed all the time before you came
around. Paul’s thoughts could be
read on his face. But before anyone
could, Marko was back with the food.
“Feedin’ time. Come
‘n get it boys… and girl!” Marko’s announcement broke into the red haze
covering Cora and Dwayne. They were
suddenly aware that they weren’t alone.
Dwayne turned his head to tell Marko where he could shove the food. Cora grabbed his chin, forcing him to look
back at her. Calm down, big
boy. I imagine my eyes are glowing as
bright as yours. He closed his
eyes, willing himself to calm down. She
did the same. When they both opened
their eyes again, they were back to their normal colors, fangs receded. Smiling secret smiles, they joined the
others, taking cartons of food. Show
time.
“Maggots, Michael.
You’re eating maggots. How do
they taste?” Michael spit the rice out.
“Leave him alone.”
“Sorry ‘bout that.
No hard feelings, huh? Here,
have some noodles.”
“Worms. They’re
worms. No… don’t eat that…” David shoved a forkful of noodles into his
mouth and Star whined.
“That’s enough.”
“Ah, it’s all right, girl.”
Paul. Even when he can’t stand
someone, he’s still a flirt.
“Get me my wine.”
Marko went to fetch. Cora didn’t
like this David. He was a megalomaniac
ass hole. The fact that he was faking
didn’t make it sit any better with her.
And the Boys cow-towed to him.
That meant she had to defer to him, too. It hadn’t been like this until ‘the plan’ went into effect. She just hoped it’d be done soon. Her head was starting to hurt.
Using her mental mojo was new to her. Trying to influence people, she felt like
she was in a self-help book experiment.
The Boys put her through a gauntlet for her brain. Move this... Make me see this...
Fly... But whatever they did
worked. It’d opened her up to their
‘pack communication lines,’ mental pathways that each one of them could
access. And they’d found out how she
worked within the pack. Mentally, at
least. With her abilities, they’d need
her on board. So, after explaining
David’s plan, Paul, Marko, and Dwayne begged, pleaded, and bargained with her
to go along with it. She eventually
did, but only after Dwayne made her cry uncle, in bed.
The next night, when Star was off spreading her cheer, they
practiced. The Boys each had their own
abilities to work with. David could
reach in, extract information and influence actual brain patterns. Paul was telekinetic, could move things with
his mind. Marko could influence weather
patterns. Handy in a drought. But Dwayne, he could make you see things
that weren’t there, and then some. Show
off. And Cora… well, they weren’t
quite sure what she did. But in effect,
she was the marshmallow in their mind-fuck Rice Crispie Treat. She held them together, stabilized them. And with what they were planning, they
needed her.
“Don’t. You don’t
have to…. It’s blood…” Star. Whining. Again.
Michael scoffed.
“Yeah, right.” He up
ended the bottle. Drank the whole damn
thing. Serves him right, the stupid
fuck. Star and Laddie drank from
that same bottle two weeks before. And
it was filled with blood. Only it
wasn’t any of theirs. It was Max’s
blood.
When the Boys brought her into the pack, she finally
understood. To bring her in, they all
had to share blood, binding them together, usually fang to skin. Dwayne would have none of that, so they
settled for a cup. Dwayne, David, Paul
and Marko bled into a cup, and she drank it, taking pieces of them into
her. Then she bled into the cup, and
each one of them took a drink from it.
And that was it. So much for
a super-secret induction ceremony.
That day while she slept, she saw them. Snippets of their lives, both human and
vampire. David found Dwayne in the mid
1700’s. After being together for a
hundred years, David was getting bored.
He knew Dwayne wanted no part in turning anyone. So he did it on his own. Paul and Marko had been friends growing up. David found them in a ‘gentleman’s club’ in
Chicago, 1841. He wined and dined them,
wooing them to him. And then he turned
them. One night, he just brought them
home to Dwayne in St. Louis. Dwayne had
railed against them at first. But being
the charmers they are, he couldn’t fault them.
He couldn’t fault David either.
They were entertaining. And it
had worked out.
They traveled around the country for fifty odd years,
settling in Northern California. There,
they met a strapping vampire named Max.
He was older when he was turned; forty or so. He asked to join their pack.
They allowed him, only to regret it soon after and everyday since. He was a menace; leaving messes (i.e.
bodies) the Boys had to clean up; causing havoc within the pack. He appointed himself their ‘father.’ Just to appease him, they agreed, thinking
he just needed to be needed. They’d all
been there, knew what he was going through.
Long story short, Max hadn’t turned any of them. He never shared their blood, though they all
had had his. He wasn’t their
leader. But to take him out, they had
to let everyone think he was. They were
just biding their time until the opportunity presented itself. And Cora gave it to them wrapped in shiny
paper and a bow.
**********
The five motorcycles and six riders came to a stop at the
edge of the bridge. They got off and
walked to the middle of the bridge.
“Perfect timing.”
“What’s goin’ on?”
“Michael wants to know what’s going on. Marko, what’s going on?”
“”I don’t know, what’s going on Paul?”
“Who wants to know?”
“Michael wants to know.”
Cora laughed, the sound caught on the wind.
“I think we should let Michael know what’s going on. Marko?”
“Good night, Michael.
Bombs away!” Marko dropped off
the side of the bridge.
“Bottoms up, man.”
Paul disappeared. Dwayne stepped
to the edge, Cora next to him. He
flicked up his jacket collar, snapped and pointed at Michael. Cora laughed again as he jumped, pulling her
with him.
Under the bridge, the Boys and Cora hung on. Michael climbed down. He looked at all of them. Marko was on the far side, facing him. Paul next, to Marko’s left, facing out. Dwayne and Cora were to Marko’s right,
facing each other. Dwayne hung facing
in, and she hung with her hands to the inside of his, facing him, kissing him. Kissing him? What the fuck? We’re
hanging under a bridge and they’re kissing?
Michael wasn’t sure that he didn’t bite off more than he could chew
with these guys.
With Cora’s arms being shorter, Dwayne’s mouth was in line
with her collarbone. He nipped and she
yelped. She bent her head to his
upturned face, claiming his mouth just as the train started over the bridge.
“Fun, huh? Hold
on.” David taunted Michael, and Paul
let go, falling into the mist.
“Don’t be scared Michael.”
Marko let go. Cora and Dwayne
both looked over to the scared human.
What he saw almost made him let go.
Two pairs of glowing blue eyes.
They knew they terrified him, and knew David hadn’t seen. He was too focused on the human in front of
him. Turning back to each other, Cora
wrapped her legs around his waist. She
let go of the bridge, sliding down and wrapping her arms around his neck. Dwayne sucked on her tongue as he let go,
bringing his arms around her as they fell.
