Chapter Ten – Worlds Collide.
The Black Pearl rocked gently on the soft swell, sails were furled and anchors
rested deep in the soft sand of the sheltered bay. They had slipped into the
small port of Petit Goave late in the evening
tying up at the far end of the dock. Straws had been drawn and the unlucky
pirates who had got the short watched enviously as their shipmates made their
way down the gang plank, all dressed up in their finest, ready for a night of
revelry.
Jack and Will leaned on the railings speaking occasionally but mostly watching
the bustle on the wharf.
“McGuiness has docked” Jack commented with a sweeping arm and a wry grin, one
hand languidly gesturing at a ship several hundred metres
away from the Pearl. “odd place to see
him, he usually stays close to Tortuga."
“Scotsman? Big Red beard?”
Jack nodded “Aye the man has no sense of humour,
sailed with him once or twice, he told me I was a canny lad but a wee bit
irritating” the last was said with a fair Scottish accent as Jack looked at
Will with wide eyes and steepled hands.
Will gave a short laugh his eyes dancing “You don’t say Jack; he appears to
have judged you most harshly.”
Jack gave a smile that could only be described as a smirk “Truly…”he turned
“well Turner, Petit Goave breathlessly awaits us; we
should not keep her waiting.” Jack gave a twirl of his wrist and with his usual
swagger led the way down the gangplank, Will and Anna Maria following behind
him.

Bella knocked back the last of her rum and coughed as it burned a fiery trail
down her throat. The tall dark haired pirate with the scarred cheek smiled at
her.
“Another?” he asked.
He had been offering her and Tess drinks all
afternoon, but they had laughingly declined all but a few, insisting on buying
for him as often as he had ordered for them. He had nice eyes Bella decided,
but pretty eyes were not going to get him what he was wishing for, least not
from her, he was more Tess’ type anyway and she had
no desire to step on her friends toes. Tess had given
her a sharp nudge in the ribs as soon as she had seen him leaning against the
curving bar. As if reading her mind he looked over at Tess
gesturing at her glass, she glanced at her father then she shook her head in a
no but smiled as she did so. He made a sad face but smiled good-naturedly as he
shouted his order to the serving girl. As she slapped another tankard by his
elbow there was a bustle of activity in the centre of the room, tables and
chairs being pushed back as a fiddle and an accordion began to play a lively
tune.
“Come on” he grabbed Tess by the hand and pulled her
out to the middle of the floor. Bella watched them dip and twirl, sipping her
rum slowly, she laughed out loud when the scar faced pirate, his name was Nick
that was right, he had told them when they had first arrived, spun Tess off her feet, she was giggling, red hair flying around
her head, holding onto him perhaps just a little tighter than necessary. Bella
watched as Nick whispered something in her ear, Tess
glanced at the corner, her father was looking grim.
She shook her head and Nick nodded once and delivered her back to the bar,
holding out a hand to Bella. She resisted a little but not very much, she liked
to dance.
Nick swung Bella around so that her feet lifted off the ground, he was grinning
at her, his arm snugly around her waist, one hand was inching lower moving from
back to hip.
“Don’t even think it” she smiled up at him “I don’t want to have to hurt you”
she patted the blade at her side.
He frowned slightly before barking a laugh “and here I was being charming
Bella.”
“Well if you are wanting some different sort of
dancing yer wasting that charm on me.”
“Aye and I’m not risking my limbs trying to charm sweet Tess,
not with her Papa watching her like she is a lamb loose amongst the wolves.”
Bella gave a snort of laughter and he smiled back and winked before twirling
her around in a tight circle so that she laughed breathlessly.

Will pushed the battered wooden door open and held it for Anna Maria to walk
through; she rolled her eyes at him but said nothing. He shrugged, some habits
died hard. Glancing back he waited for Jack who was deep in conversation with a
bent old fellow, Jack waved at him to go ahead. He let the door swing shut and
turned to walk into the crowded tavern colliding with Anna Maria who had
stopped dead and was staring in some horror at the confusion in the middle of
the room. Waltzes, foxtrots and jigs that much Will could make out, he wondered
when the first fight would start, nothing out of the ordinary here, he was
about to ask Anna what was wrong when he too found himself staring.
Snug in the arms of a tall scar faced man, dressed not in silk but in simple
pirate garb was the girl from the gunsmiths. She was laughing looking up at the
man that held her close.
“Bella” the name burst from Anna Maria’s lips “God help us.”
As if she had heard her name Bella looked over, she froze, her eyes going wide
and her face blanching.
“Get out!” Anna Maria was mouthing even as Jack’s voice could be heard
effusively greeting some old shipmate behind them.
Bella gave one frantic nod and pulled away from her partner, leaving him
standing bemused in the middle of the floor. She sidled around the edge of the
room, keeping her back to the door; she seemed to be cautiously making her way
towards one of the open windows.
Will turned on his heel, walking back towards Jack who leaned in the doorway.
“Where are you off to Turner?” he looked up from where he was deep in
conversation with Anna Maria, her eyes were slightly wild and she had one hand
on Jack’s arm.
“You are not of the same opinion as our Anna Maria, that we should be taking
our custom elsewhere?”
“Not at all Jack” Will replied “this seems a lively place; I just thought I saw
someone I know.”
Anna Maria grabbed for Will’s arm her face dismayed, gently he patted her hand
away and eased out the door. Treading quietly on the shell path he made his way
around the side of the timber building, opposite the window he stopped resting
a hip against the rough sawn planks he waited, hidden in the shadows. Only
minutes later a window creaked outwards and a slim leg slid over the sill,
closely followed by shapely hips. As the woman dropped to the packed dirt with
a soft thud he stepped forward and touched her shoulder.
The knife was at his throat before he could blink.
“Get back” her voice was low and slightly husky but there was no fear in it.
“I mean no harm” but that said he withdrew his hand. She looked up at him and
her face went white.
“You” she gasped spinning to peer down the narrow alley “Where’s Jack?” she
appeared ready to run.
“Inside” he looked at her “you have nothing to fear from Jack, he would not
hurt a soul, not without justification.”
“I know that” the retort was sharp and she looked angry as if Will had said something
offensive.
He felt a surge of irritation “So you know Jack do you Bella?” he looked her up
and down his eyes lingered so that she flushed, his tone was slightly insulting
when he spoke “odd that I have never heard him speak of you, so how do you know
him, old friend? old lover perhaps?”
“Don’t be disgusting” her eyes were shooting sparks “he is my brother you
fool.”
