Disclaimer: I do not own The Mummy movie series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
I think I have tortured
ou enough with the long wait and will quickly head over to the story
after some short words to my wonderful reviewers.
Sheri: Sorry, but no
relationship for Jon in this one, but maybe I'll let him have some
gold in the end (as a little comfort).
Racoona: I know I'm
evil, but the cliffie won't be as bad this time. Besides, I've
already started on the next chappie.
Chapter 10 – Sekmet's chosen
Jonathan slowly crawled
closer to one of the temple's corners, while he examined the
hieroglyphics on the wall. Or at least he pretended to do so, since
his interest had been captured by the huge golden statue in the
corner.
It was a large Cobra,
her mouth opened and ready to strike. Her tongue was made from a
shiny ruby and scale-shaped emeralds were scattered all over her
body. All these glittering stones were so very tempting, but they
would be far too large and heavy to inconspicuously take them with
him, when they left the temple.
So the small lion
statues lying everywhere around the Cobra's body had become the
target of Jonathan's desire. He knew that Rick and the Med-jai would
probably throw a fit if they knew what he was doing, but what they
didn't know, they couldn't complain about. Quickly looking around
himself the Englishman made sure that everyone's attention lingered
elsewhere, before he stretched out his hand to grab one of the
statues.
Dammit, the small thing
was quite heavy. Cheering inside that this meant that it was probably
made from pure gold and would make him a fine fortune Jonathan
gingerly placed it inside his pocket. He was planning to reach out
for a second one, when a vicious hiss could be heard from above him.
The statue had come
alive. Panic swept through his body as the huge Cobra reared up her
head, baring her teeth and hissing at him. He wanted to crawl
backwards, but his legs seemed to be frozen in place by the snake's
hypnotic stare.
Venom was almost
dripping from her teeth as her head came closer to his, the
flickering tongue almost close enough to touch his face. “Good
snake.” Jonathan had unconsciously raised his hands in a
placating pose, but the Cobra seemed unimpressed. Instead his empty
hands only served to heighten her agitation further.
High time for someone
to save him. Jonathan closed his eyes the same moment the snake's
body tensed, ready for attack. But the expected pain didn't come.
Instead he heard the sickening sound of a blade tearing through flesh
and a last dying hiss.
Carefully opening his
eyes he was once again faced with the snake's statue, but it was now
missing it's head. Ardeth's sword was stuck in the wall, perilously
close to his head. The blood that coated the blade was dripping to
the ground and turning to rubies there. He was about to reach out for
the glittering stones, when Rick's voice reached his ears.
“Jonathan, you goddamn idiot.
What did you do this time?”
Slowly getting up from
the ground the Englishman looked at the Med-jai's and Rick's accusing
faces. Alex only shook his head and got back to searching for the
information they needed. Trying to sound as innocent as possible,
Jonathan replied: “I didn't do anything.”
Obviously he hadn't
done that well, since the only answer he got was a disbelieving snort
from Rick. “Whatever you tried to steal, just put it back and
don't touch anything else!” Grumbling something about wishing
that Ardeth's sword had hit someone other than the snake Rick left
him alone.
Sighing in regret
Jonathan pulled the lion statue out of his pocket and put it back to
where he had taken it from. Such a pity to let all this beautiful
gold go to waste in the middle of the desert, but the Englishman
refrained from voicing his thoughts out loud, knowing that it would
only earn him a couple of disapproving looks.

After the incident with
Jonathan had happened Rick had gone back to checking the writing on
the temple walls, but he constantly threw suspicious glances at his
brother-in-law. He should have known that the other man couldn't keep
his fingers to himself, but he had expected Jonathan to grasp the
seriousness of their situation. Obviously not, since he was once
again eying a golden statue. But as soon as he noticed Rick's gaze
Jonathan concentrated on the hieroglyphics again.
He was about to turn
towards Ardeth and ask his lover, if he was sure that they were at
the right temple, when Alex's shout echoed through the room.
“I found something.”
Rick, Ardeth, Jonathan
and the other Med-jai immediately ran over to Alex, gathering around
the blond boy kneeling in front of the huge lioness statue. He was
pointing to a small section at the base of Sekmet's throne, a few
hieroglyphics that were surrounded by lion-headed warriors.
“What does it say?”
“'The army of Sekmet shall be
raised by the two chosen ones when the time of need is near. Through
trials they have to go to prove themselves worthy of the goddess'
blessing before the army will rise to their command. A warrior from
the orient and a western warrior, united by fate and love. No other
may enter the competition, for they are not worthy of the goddess'
attention.' I'd say that sounds like it's about you and Ardeth, dad.”
Huh? Alex knew about
them? But he couldn't remember ever having slipped in front of him
and displayed affection towards Ardeth that went further than
friendship. How did he...Jonathan. As soon as he had come to the
conclusion that his brother-in-law hadn't kept his mouth shut Rick
turned an accusing glare in his direction, but Alex continued to
speak.
“Before you get mad at uncle
Jon, he didn't tell me before I knew anyway. Even somebody blind
could have recognized the sappy looks you threw in Ardeth's direction
the whole time. Besides I'm not stupid.”
Rick could feel a blush
creep over his cheeks at Alex's explanation. Here he was, thinking
that they had been quite clever and kept their relationship well
hidden and now his son was telling him that he had been absolutely
obvious. Trying to get the incredulous look that had spread over his
features off his face Rick spoke:
“Well, yes...Can we get back
to the riddle now?”
He was furious about
the smug smile that spread over Alex' features causing him to redden
a little more and if he had heard correctly Ardeth had chuckled at
his current situation. He would have probably given another sarcastic
comment, but Ardeth quickly started to talk.
“Everybody but Rick and myself
should leave the temple. If I am not mistaken the goddess will
contact us then.”
The Med-jai and
Jonathan immediately heeded Ardeth's command, but Alex stayed behind.
Wondering what his son wanted to say to him Rick was surprised when
Alex suddenly threw his arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.
“Please be careful, dad.”
“I will. Love you, Alex.”
Placing a tender kiss on top of Alex's head Rick set his son down,
watching as Alex ran towards the temple's exit.

“What do we do now?”
Ardeth looked at Rick's
questioning face as his lover had now turned back towards him. It had
been a real surprise that Alex had known about their relationship,
although he hadn't been as shocked as Rick. The boy was intelligent
enough and he had always suspected that it would merely be a matter
of time before he figured it out. He knew that Rick had been worried
about his son's reaction, but so far it seemed to be a positive one.
“We'll wait and see.”
Turning his attention
back towards Sekmet's statue Ardeth tried to focus completely on the
goddess, but Rick's constant shuffling next to him was destroying his
concentration. His lover was nervously biting his lip and Ardeth
immediately wanted nothing more than to free it and suck on it.
Finally giving in to
the temptation Ardeth pulled his lover into his arms, stopping his
nervous movements. “Rick, it didn't look as if he has a problem
with our relationship, so please stop worrying about your son.”
A cocky expression had
spread over Rick's face as he answered, the reason why they were in
the temple momentarily forgotten. “Who said that I was thinking
about him?”
Not able to resist any
longer Ardeth pulled Rick into a tender kiss, their lips molding
together in perfect harmony. Closing his eyes in blissed happiness as
his lover's tongue invaded his mouth, the Med-jai was unaware of
their changing surroundings.
When he opened his eyes
again they weren't in the rich temple anymore, but in a small, round
chamber. The walls were made of rough stone and there was no door or
pathway in sight. Looking at Rick he said:
“It has begun.”
