Disclaimer: I do not own The Mummy movie series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Sorry, that it's been
so long since the last update. I couldn't resist writing this
chapter. You'll probably understand why, after you have read it.
Stixx: Thanks a lot for
your review.
Morningstar: The
proposed marriage council will be important in the sequel I have
planned, but it won't matter in the current story. It was just an
idea, that I found very funny and had to include in the story.
Ariane: I'm glad you
like it. There will be more of Nefertiri's POV later on.
Chapter 10 – Kom-Ombo
They had reached a
small room at the end of the tunnel. It was a mummification
chamber as the tools, that were still lying around, showed. Exploring
the chamber further, Rick called Ardeth into a corner of the room.
There were five mummies lying around on stone benches, that were
richly adorned in gold and gems. Something about these mummies was
strange, so Rick went closer to examine them.
Bringing his torch
close to the bodies, he could see, that the figures weren't human.
Ardeth had followed him, so he told him: “I didn't know that
crocodiles were mummified too.”
“They usually weren't. But
this was Sobek's temple and the crocodiles living here were seen as
holy in the ancient days.”
Rick had reached out
and let his hand hover over one of the mummies. Suddenly a loud
rumbling filled the room as the chamber door closed. The two of them
got a quick glance at Nefertiri, before the door hid her completely.
Cursing under his breath, Rick examined the door, trying to find a
way out. On the other side, Nefertiri started chanting in old
Egyptian.
“What the hell is she doing?”
Her chanting stopped
and nothing happened. Looking around the chamber, Ardeth and Rick
tried to find another way out, when suddenly one of the crocodiles
stirred. When it opened it's jaws, the bandages around it crumbled to
dust. Meanwhile the other crocodiles had also awoken and started to
advance on Rick and Ardeth.
Pulling out his gun,
Rick shot at them, but that only slowed them down. He had a stick of
dynamite in his bag, but the room was too small to use it. Ardeth
pulled a scimitar out of his belt and slashed at the first crocodile,
that drew back a bit, when it's mouth was injured. But that only
momentarily stopped it, before it advanced again.
They had absolutely no
chance like that and if they didn't come up with a plan soon, they
were crocodile food. Looking down at the stick of dynamite he had
taken out of the bag, Rick contemplated blowing away the door. It was
risky, but it was probably their only chance.
“Ardeth. We have to get to the
other side of the room, away from the door.”
Giving Rick a short
nod, Ardeth tried to find a way to get past the crocodiles. They were
coming closer, further backing him into a corner of the chamber. He
swung his scimitar at their jaws, causing the two closest to him to
shut them. Jumping over their heads, Ardeth landed on their backs,
his way to the other end of the chamber clear. But Rick was still
cornered by the crocodiles, so he cut at their tails with his sword,
getting their attention away from Rick.
Seizing his chance,
Rick lit up the stick of dynamite and threw it at the door. “Duck
behind a sarcophagus.”, he shouted at Ardeth, before taking
cover himself. The crocodiles, irritated by the sparks of the
dynamite, weren't advancing further towards them. Joining Rick,
Ardeth covered his ears, waiting for the explosion.

Bang.
The pieces of the door
flew through the chamber, but the sarcophagus protected them from the
full impact of the blast. Some smaller stones rained down around
them, but they either didn't hit the two of them or
they were so small, that they didn't even hurt.
Carefully coming out
from their shelter, they could see that the door had been completely
cleared away. The same fate had met three of the crocodiles, but the
other two were still moving. They were pinned under some large, heavy
rocks, but when they began to stir, the rocks started shifting a bit.
“Let's get out of here, before
these things get free.”
Running back the tunnel
they had taken before, Rick and Ardeth reached the fork in the
hallway again. This time, they took the other doorway, which led into
another dark tunnel. It was shorter than the last one and led them
into a beautiful golden chamber. Neither Nefertiri nor the key were
anywhere in sight, but the statues of Maat and Isis, that were
decorating the walls, implied, that they had found the right chamber.
“Nefertiri, has probably
already gotten the key.”
“Rick, watch the entrance.
I'll search for the directions to the last key.”
Leaning back against
the pillars that framed the entrance to the chamber, Rick watched
Ardeth trail along the walls. The light of the torch reflected on his
glossy black hair, taking Rick's breath away. His eyes were captured
by the Med-jai's graceful movements, until
Ardeth's voice shook him out of his trance.
“I found it. 'The
mirror the father, the mother the book and the son shall be the
key.'”
“Huh?” Rick felt really stupid at the moment, because
the way Ardeth made it sound, it had to be an easy riddle. Ardeth was
already hurrying out of the door and Rick
followed him, after coming to the conclusion, that the wide robes the
Med-jai wore were impractical, because they effectively hid his ass
from view.
“Where are we headed now?”
“The temple at Edfu. It was the ceremonial
center of the Horus cult.”
Ah, Horus. Of course. Now the rhyme made a little more sense to
Rick. Isis was the mother and Osiris the father. Finally
knowing, where they had to go next, they hurried out of the tunnel.
To their luck, Nefertiri hadn't bothered to get rid of the rope
hanging down the well. She had been sure, that the crocodiles would
take care of her two opponents. Climbing out of the well, they
hurried over to their horses and left the temple.

Edfu wasn't far away from Kom-Ombo, but they had to cross the
Nile. It took them a while to find a boat, that would take them to
the other side. The sun was already nearing the horizon again, but
Rick insisted on riding a bit further. Half an hour later, Ardeth
started to nervously scan the sky.
“What are you looking for?”
“There are no birds in the sky. A sandstorm is headed our
way.”
“Damn it. We should head back to town.”
Ardeth once again looked at the sky. “It's too late for
that. We need to find shelter quickly.”
At the horizon, they could already see clouds of dust darkening
the sky. The storm was quickly moving their way. Looking around, Rick
spotted a ridge in the desert, than looked like it was made of stone
rather than sand.
“Hey Ardeth. Look over there. Maybe there are some caves we
can hide in.”
Spurring their horses on, they rode in the direction of the rock
formation, the sandstorm drawing closer and closer to them. They
could see the rocky surface clearer now, but there were no obvious
caves to be spotted. They had to find shelter during the next few
minutes or the storm would hit them full force. Arriving at the
rocks, they searched for a cave.
The first grains of sand were already hitting their bodies and the
smooth rocky surface didn't yield the smallest bit of shelter from
the storm. The wind picked up, blowing sand in their faces, stinging
their cheeks and eyes. But the main body of the storm was yet to
come.
