Chapter 11
Jack awoke,
and for a precious moment the world was perfect. So perfect.
Will was
lying in his arms. Sleeping.
Warm and
wonderful.
He turned
his head, kissed his hair.
Feeling
blessed that he had found a love he had not hoped for anymore.
Jack took a
deep breath. Breathed in the fresh night air that came in through the open
porthole.
Many, many
years at sea had sharpened his senses. The salt in the air. The faint
whistling, howling sound of the wind. The ship, rolling through the waves.
Jack
breathed in again. No. There was no mistaking.
A storm was
coming.
Gently, so
he would not wake him up, he kissed Will´s cheek. Pulled his arm with a
regretful sigh from under his neck.
He got up
and dressed silently.
Jack was
halfway up the stairs to the deck when the first mate met him on his way down.
“Captain,
just wanted to wake you up…”
“I´m
coming.”
The day was
dawning, but the sun had no chance to break through the heavy clouds. Instead
of getting brighter, the morning seemed to turn darker. The wind was strong
now, it was hard to hold the Endeavour on course.
Jack
checked the compass. “We are drifting westwards. If the wind does not change,
we will miss our destination and will be blown towards this small island, the…”
he pressed the map against the helm. “… the Isla de la Cascada, whatever this
is.”
The next
gust of wind nearly tore the map from his hand. Rain started to pour down.
“Mr.
Philips, stay at the helm. I am back in a minute.”
Jack could not
help but smile when he opened the cabin door. Will was still asleep.
He touched
his shoulder, shook him gently.
“Wake up,
Will.”
Will opened
his eyes, and one look into Jack´s eyes made him sit up instantly.
“What´s
wrong?”
“There´s a
storm coming up. A heavy one, I fear. We are losing course.”
When they
came on deck, a huge wave crashed on the planks, drenching them completely.
Jack
grabbed Will´s wrist. He had been in many storms. Hurricanes. They never had
bothered him. But this time, he was seized by an unknown premonition.
“Will…”
Will wiped
his face, looked at him. “Jack…”
“Whatever
happens, stay with me.”
Every man
was on deck now, and they were fighting the storm with all their strength. It
was useless to shout orders, as the howling and raging of the wind and the
crashing waves made it impossible to understand a word. They were not able to
look at the map anymore, but the compass told them they were way too far
westwards.
“Can we
reach that island and seek shelter there?” Will had to scream it into Jack´s
ear twice before he understood him.
“We have to
try it!” Jack shouted back. “But there are reefs, we have to be careful…”
“Jack!!”
Jack turned
his head at Will´s scream and he saw the huge wave coming. They both held on to
the helm when it crashed on and washed over the ship, heard the horrible noise
of the front mast when it tilted, broke and burst on deck. The Endeavour jumped
like a stubborn horse.
“The
island! There!”
Jack´s eyes
followed Will´s arm. In the distance there was a shadow, right above the
surface. He saw it. But he also saw other shadows. Close, in the valley the
waves formed.
The reefs.
They both
held the helm now with all their might, trying to steer the ship away from the
dangerous peaks.
Another
wave came, lifting the ship up like a nutshell. Will held on to the helm, held
on to Jack´s arm.
The sea
dropped the Endeavour back into the ocean.
And they
both stared at each other when they heard the horrible sound of splintering
wood.
Jack pressed
Will´s hand. “I have to check the damage.”
Will shook
his head. “Let me come with you.”
“It´s
dangerous, Will.”
“You said I
should stay with you.”
Jack opened
his mouth to reply, but Will had grabbed Mr. Philips´ arm.
“Can you
stay at the helm for a moment?”
They both
stumbled, ran over the planks to the door that led to the stairs. Climbed down.
And only
one look was needed.
Water was
bursting through a huge, ugly hole. The lower deck was a mess.
Jack closed
his eyes, swallowed.
Will
touched his shoulder. “Can we fix it?”
Jack shook
his head.
“No. We
have to get the lifeboat ready.”
He turned
around, looked at Will.
“We´re
sinking.”
They
climbed up the stairs again.
“Abandon
ship!” Jack shouted over the deck.
They
unfastened the lifeboat. Luckily the Endeavour was tilted to the side where the
boat was, so it was easy to bring it over the rail. Some of the men were
already in the boat when the next huge wave crashed on deck.
“Hold on
everybody!”
Will
tumbled backwards, grabbed the door-frame. He looked downstairs. The water was
still pouring inside, filling the ship slowly.
“Watch out!
Another wave!”
Jack helped
Mr. Philips, who had been hit by a piece of wood, into the boat.
“Everybody
inside? Okay…”
He looked
over his shoulder.
“Will, come,
quick…”
An ice cold
fist grabbed his heart.
The deck
was empty.
Jack stared
at the spot where Will had been standing.
“Will…” he
whispered.
Then he ran
over the deck.
“Will!!”
He screamed
his name like a wounded animal.
He grabbed
the rail, looked down into the raging sea. Suddenly he had to fight to breathe.
Everything was spinning around him.
“Will!!”
The crew in
the lifeboat looked at each other. Mr. Philips shook his head.
“No
chance.” he mumbled.
“Captain!”
Jack turned
around. Never had the first mate seen such panic on his Captain´s face.
“Captain,
we have to let the lifeboat to sea and get to the island, or we are all lost!”
Jack stared
at him. His eyes flew over the deck.
“A moment.
Wait just a moment.”
He stumbled
two steps down the stairs to the lower deck.
“Will!?”
“Jack…”
The voice
was faint, hardly audible through the storm. Jack´s knees nearly gave in.
He ran the
stairs up again.
“I found
him, wait, we…”
In that moment
the next wave crashed against the ship. The Endeavour began to tilt to the
opposite side, and the lifeboat slammed against its side. Jack realised that
when they did not put it out to the water, it would become impossible. There
would be no chance left for the crew to leave the sinking ship.
He pulled
out his sword.
“Mr.
Philips, cut the left rope. I´ll cut this one.”
“But
Captain, what about you…”
“I´ll get
Mr. Turner. He´s somewhere down in the ship. We… We´ll swim. We´ll reach the
lifeboat, don´t worry.”
Mr. Philips
looked into the raging sea, doubtfully.
“Alright…”
They cut
the ropes simultaneously, and the lifeboat dropped into the sea. The crew began
to row away from the reefs. It was difficult, but they managed to bring a
distance between them and the wounded Endeavour.
Jack ran
over to the door-frame, stumbled downstairs.
“Will!
Will, where are you?!”
“Here…
Jack, I´m here…”
He did not
recognise the lower deck anymore. Cabin walls and doors were crushed, jars and
boxes were drifting through the rising water. Furniture lay all over the place,
it was already impossible to tell where which cabin had been. The light that
shone through the broken portholes was dim, and Jack could hardly see where he
was.
And then he
saw Will. He was lying half upright in the water in a chaos of broken wood and
furniture.
Tears of
relief ran down Jack´s cheeks. He made his way through the rubble, fell on his
knees beside Will, grabbed his head, covered his face with kisses.
“Oh my God,
I found you, I found you… I thought I…”
Will
caressed Jack´s cheek. “Oh Jack… I am sorry, the wave just washed me down the
stairs..”
Jack turned
his head, kissed his hand. “That´s not your fault…” He closed his eyes briefly
to regain his strength.
“Come. Come,
Baby…”
He took
Will´s hand, tried to pull him up. Will cried out.
“Jack! I… I
can´t…”
Jack looked
at him, looked closer. And then he saw it. Will´s lower body was buried under
the broken wood, the wood was pressed down by a huge, heavy wardrobe. He
breathed in sharply.
“Wait…”
He got up,
tried to lift the wardrobe. It did not move. He tried again. Nothing. Panic
threatened to make his hands weak.
“I´ll get
you out of here, Will, I swear…”
He took a
deep breath, tried to pull the heavy piece of furniture up. His arms were
burning, he felt a sharp pain in his hand, looked down, saw a drop of blood
running down his wrist.
Still he
could do nothing.
“Jack…”
Will´s voice was faint and small. He reached out his hand.
Jack got
down on his knees again, his eyes wide with despair. He noticed that the water
was rising. It was up to their waists now.
“I will try
to get the crew back, the lifeboat can´t be too far away…”
Will shook
his head.
“No… I hope
they are safe, we can´t risk their lives…”
He took a
deep breath. Took Jack´s face between his hands.
“I… Can´t
get out of here, Jack. There´s nothing you can do. ”
He bent
forward, kissed him with trembling lips.
“You have
to go. You have to save your life.”
Jack stared
at him.
“No…”
Will
nodded. His eyes were swimming in tears, but he managed to keep his voice
steady.
“You have
to go now. Quickly. The ship will sink any minute.”
Jack closed
his eyes. And when he opened them again, his panic had disappeared. His face
softened.
He wrapped
his arms around Will, held him tight.
“No, Will.”
he said calmly. “I won´t leave you.”
Will held
his breath.
“You have
to… Please, Jack… You can still walk, run, swim…” Tears were streaming down his
face when he tried to push Jack away. “You can´t stay, you will drown…”
Jack
caressed his face, kissed his lips.
“Don´t even
try, Will. You won´t bring me to leave you.”
Gently he
brushed back the wet hair from his face.
“I love
you…” he whispered. “And I am so happy that I have the chance to tell you this…
Let´s not argue. There is not much time left. I won´t leave.”
“No!” Will
buried his face at Jack´s shoulder, he was crying openly now. “Go! You have to
go…”
Jack
smiled. Tenderly he stroked Will´s head. ”Shhh…“
He placed
his hand under Will´s chin, lifted it so that he was looking into his eyes
again.
“I won´t
leave you.”
Will´s eyes
were wide, frightened.
Jack kissed
him.
“I won´t
leave you.” he repeated. “I love you. And I don´t want to live without you.”
For what
seemed to them like a precious eternity, they looked at each other.
Until Will
had no choice but to accept Jack´s decision.
Slowly the
fear disappeared from his eyes.
He gave up
the fight. His face turned soft when he slid his arms around Jack´s neck.
“I love
you, too…” he whispered. “I love you so much…”
The water
had reached their shoulders. Jack caressed Will´s face with his fingertips.
“I am
sorry…” he said softly. “If I hadn´t taken you with me in Port Royal, you could
live on your life now, you…”
Will
silenced him with a kiss.
“Jack…” he
whispered. “No… Don´t say that… I would do it all again. Even if I knew how it
ends today, I would do it all again. I would go with you again…”
Jack looked
at him, speechless.
“Is that
true?” he whispered.
Will
smiled, nodded.
Jack
stroked his back tenderly, pressed their foreheads together.
“There was
so much I wanted to show you… I wanted to see the northern lights with you…”
Will pulled
him even closer into his arms.
“I am sure
that… When it is over… We will be somewhere else. Together.”
Jack
nodded. “Yes, my love…” he whispered.
He was not
a very religious man. But in that moment he sent a little prayer up to heaven
that all the things he had done in his life hadn´t been so bad that they would
bring him somewhere else than to where Will would be.
Will
shivered in his arms. The water was cold, and he gasped for air when a wave
washed against his face. “Oh Jack…”
Jack heard
a deep, aching noise somewhere down in the ship. He knew it was over.
Tenderly he
kissed Will.
“It won´t
hurt.” He said softly. “Take a deep breath, and when the water is rising…
Breathe out, and then just breathe it in. Don´t fight it.”
Will´s eyes
were warm and full of love. He kissed Jack.
“I love
you.… Thank you… For everything…”
Jack opened
his lips to reply. Then he heard a splintering, crashing noise behind him, but
he did not turn his head anymore. “I love you…” he whispered quickly.
Something
hard and heavy hit him from behind, and the last image he saw before everything
turned dark, were Will´s loving, deep brown eyes.
