Chapter 1
I should start in the beginning of how it all happened. I shouldn't even be writing this at all. I mean I can write this, but someone will only think of it as a fiction story. Well it's my story. I really should just start in the beginning and how it all happened. The year is 2004. Its summer and that means I was working more hours again, since there isn't any school here during that time. I had moved to a house, which was nice and the bus stop was so close to where I lived. I was in my work pants that were black. A long sleeved white import shirt that kinda looked like a pirate shirt, which I have a little tank top underneath. Whatever. I was carrying a blue bag jammed with what I needed, including what I needed to wear for my dept. I don't want to get into it that much, because it's not that I am ashamed of where I work, it's more of a privacy thing. I had my diskman with the remote in the blue bag and decided to listen to Newsies. So I get the headphones out and started to listen to it. The subway was jammed with people and I sat in an area that wasn't so packed. I didn't even know what hit me, just that I must of closed my eyes and then I felt like I was being crushed, but I wasn't, it was more like falling and then when I opened my eyes I was laying on my back with the headphones still on and the bag still on my shoulder. I get up and look around, automatically turning the Discman off and sticking it back in the blue bag. I can't believe my eyes. There is no way I can be where I think I am. I look behind me and there is laundry that is clean in the basement of this building. I look to see if anybody sees me and I open the window and crawl in, I notice I'm small enough and jump down to where the clothes are folded and I notice they aren't labeled yet.
Morgan: Sorry, I usually don't do this, but I have no choice, please forgive me GOD.
I pull out a shirt and pants/w suspenders and look at them. I notice a few boxes piled up and go behind them. I change into the clothes and then look for a place to stash my blue bag after I had put the headphones back it the place I stash them. I find a laundry bag and slip it in there with my change of clothes I was wearing of course. I then carry it with both hands. I have my hair cut short like my character in my fics has it. I then go to the window and peek out. I look and there isn't anybody, so I crawl out and then head down to the other end of the alley. I then sneak over to another area and grab a cap from the clothesline. I put the cap on and tuck my hair so the only hair you see is just little bit to make me look like a boy. I had to find out where I was. I walk for awhile and then look, it's dark and I hate the dark. I look around and I am trying to deny where I think I am, it's impossible and only fiction I write. This can't be where I think I am no way. I keep walking now hoping someone will not bother me. I keep walking with my head sorta down holding the laundry bag to my chest and I finally stop to look up and there is the NEWSBOY LODGING HOUSE, my eyes get wide and I stare at the front of it and of course don't even think before something comes out of my mouth.
Morgan: Oh shit, I am here.
I look around and it's deserted and then frown when I realize I don't have any money at all, except the money in my bag and I can't use that money, what the fuck will they think when they look at the dates on the money? I stand there and I'm about to leave when I recognize the voice behind me.
Race: Well aren't you going in?
I turn around and look at Race and frown of course.
Morgan: I aint got any money, so I don't have any place to stay.
Race digs in his pocket and holds out his hand.
Race: Here, you can pay me back when you sell your papes, you do know how to sell don't you?
Morgan: Um, no.
Race: Well then someone will just have to teach you, so come on let's go in, it's getting late.
I follow Race in and then recognize Mr. Kloppman.
Mr. Kloppman: Hello, welcome to the Newsboy Lodging House, coming in little late Race?
Race: Sorry about that, this here's a new one, sorry kid didn't get your name.
Morgan: Lit'l Bit.
Race: Lit'l Bit you have to sign this book here.
I take the pen and sign my newsie name and then follow him in. I am still wondering if it's a dream and why the hell I am there in the first place. I smile when I get to be in the boys bunkroom and then smile when I notice the newsies that around a table playing poker. I try not to be nervous. Race introduces me to the newsies, I notice one newsie not there and that's Jack and then one of them asks me a question.
Mush: So Lit'l Bit where are you from?
I tell them the truth kinda; I mean I leave out the year of course duh.
Morgan: Chicago.
Mush: Never heard of it, so you want to play poker with us?
Morgan: No, I think I'll just go to sleep; I'm a little tired from my trip.
Race takes me to a bunk in the corner.
Race: Here this one's empty.
Morgan: Thanks Race.
I watch Race leave then I go to the washroom and get ready for sleep, I slide the bag under my bunk all the way back to the wall and then take off my glasses and set them on the nightstand that's next to my bunk.
Morgan: I wonder who's bunk this use to be.
I yawn and rub my eyes; of course I talk out loud.
Morgan: Let's just hope this isn't a dream at all and when I wake up I'm here still.
Jack: Do you always talk to yourself?
I turn around and look up and there is Jack, the newsie I adore, I look up at him and tell him of course.
Morgan: Yeah, but if I start to answer myself then I'm in trouble.
Jack: Oh.
Morgan: Do you always sneak up on people?
Jack: Only the new ones.
Morgan: I see well then I'm Lit'l Bit and you are?
Of course I know who he is; he's one of my favorite newsies!
Jack: Jack Kelly aka "cowboy"
Jack spits in his hand and holds it out for me and I spit in mine and then shake his hand, but the only thing is his hands are huge and mine are tiny. I don't say anything to him really and then I feel him let go of my hand and that's when I say something.
Morgan: Well goodnight, I'll talk to you in the morning.
I lay down on my bunk and go to my side, I close my eyes and leave Jack there, when I open my eyes to look Jack is gone and I smile and think to myself.+
Morgan: MMMMM, he's gonna be one newsie I gotta lay while I'm here. +
I close my eyes, but later I can't sleep, for some reason I just can't so I head to the roof that I had hoped there would be one of course and went up there to look at the whole city, I didn't think I'd ever end up in New York, which I found out from a used paper that it was June, 1900. A year after the newsies strike. I of course wondered if poor Jack was still seeing prude Sarah. I stood up there leaning forward on the edge of the roof, a safe spot to look out over Manhattan. (I’m surprised that being afraid of heights hasn’t prevented me from looking over the city up on a roof.)
Morgan: It sure is beautiful here.
I must have been up there for a pretty long while when I recognized the voice.
Mush: Whatcha doing up here so late in the night Lit'l Bit?
I turned around to see Mush walking towards me.
Morgan: I guess I couldn't sleep, being here of course is a dream come true and I guess I thought maybe if I closed my eyes and wake up it would only be a dream.
I wasn't thinking of course when I said it and realized what I had said.
Mush: Well it's no dream; you're in Manhattan New York.
I smile at Mush, looking up in his eyes now.
Morgan: Yeah I guess so, come on I gotta get some sleep.
Mush and I walk down and I go back to my bunk, which is across from Jack, so I can see him clearly, but I ignore him of course. I gotta act like a guy, not a girl. I yawn and close my eyes, hoping when I wake up I'm still in the year 1900 Manhattan, New York with the newsies. I fall asleep. I listen to the sounds of the snores and finally drift in a deep sleep.
