“It’s so beautiful,” said Jane Foster as she gazed out at the indescribable splendour of Asgard.
Thor smiled warmly, savouring every second of a moment he feared might never have come. The God of Thunder’s banishment to Midgard, or Earth, may have only lasted days, but in that time he had experienced so much – and experienced it all with Jane. The destruction of the Bifrost Bridge, necessary though it had been to thwart the plans of his brother Loki, had torn him apart. Banished from Asgard, apparently responsible for the death of the Allfather, scorned by his mother, deemed unworthy to lift the hammer Mjolnir, Thor had never experienced such dejection. Nor was he accustomed to the traditions of the Midgardians. At the moment when he had been utterly lost, it was his acceptance by this human, this scientist, that ultimately allowed him to redeem himself. Yet the disappearance of the Bifrost had rendered his return to Asgard truly bittersweet. Short though their time together had been, Thor was consumed with the desire to see Jane once more. He had searched the wisdom of Heimdall, taken counsel from Odin, strove in every way possible to reconstruct the Bifrost. But in the end, it was Jane who had managed to traverse the distance between them. Drawing on all her knowledge of astrophysics, she had presented her research to the Misgardian organization S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to harness the engineering knowledge of the human Tony Stark. Their combined brilliance, with the resources of S.H.I.E.L.D. behind them, led finally to the creation of an interdimensional portal connecting Jane’s realm with Asgard. Heimdall had first been alerted to the outsider’s presence. Convinced of her virtue and wisdom, he escorted her to the heart of Asgard, the palace of Odin, to reunite with Thor. In the midst of training for battle, a gloomy Thor had been stirred from his thoughts by the voice he had yearned to hear. Seeing Jane in the doorway, his face had lit up with the brightness of a thousand bolts of lightning. He embraced her, kissed her, and held her for what felt like an eternity but could only have been a few minutes. Though he had slain countless monsters and fought the mightiest of warriors, this, truly, was an experience to remember. Once the initial euphoria had dissipated somewhat, Thor took Jane by the hand and led her around the great halls of the city. Jane stared out at the beauty of Asgard in the manner of a blind woman who has now been granted the gift of sight. “It’s...amazing,” she managed. “I’ve spent my whole life studying the galaxies, the planets, the stars. I thought about the possibility of other dimensions, but to actually be here and see something like this...I just can’t get over it.” Her smile was infectious, although at the moment Thor hardly needed any help. He was delighted at the thought of showing Jane around Asgard. Despite the fact he had lived his whole life in this realm, the sheer magnificence of his home continued to impress him. He could only imagine what it might be like for a human. “Jane,” said Thor. “I’m glad you are here with me. You must see everything.” The young astrophysicist beamed, and the two spent the next hours wandering through the glorious city, as Thor explained each wondrous structure as the fruits of a great civilization. The sheer novelty of these interdimensional beings was more than enough for Jane, but she was riveted by Thor’s recounting of the battles, tragedies and victories by which the mighty kingdom of Asgard had been forged. As evening beckoned, Thor turned to Jane. “I wish to invite you to the Hall of Odin,” he said. “You shall experience a true Asgardian feast in the presence of the Allfather himself! My friends, the Warriors Three and the lady Sif, will be thrilled to see you again!” Jane smiled. “I’d love to,” she said as they entered the Great Hall. “Right now?” Thor shook his head. “The Allfather’s servants will first tend to your needs,” he said, motioning to a pair of female courtiers milling about. They came to Jane and were about to guide her towards a room in the eastern wing of the palace, before Thor touched her on the shoulder. As she turned to face him, he kissed her hand. “I look forward to seeing you again, Jane.” She grinned and returned to the courtiers. There was indeed a deep hunger she felt inside. But it was a hunger that would likely not be satisfied at the forthcoming feast. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
