Author's Note: For this story I've upped the timeline of the Ghostbusters movie to have taken past in the recent past. The story line also shifts between the years of 1992 and 2008, with time periods noted.
2008 I didn’t know why I felt so nervous as I stepped out of the taxi. Maybe because the last time I’d seen my brother he’d told me he never wanted to see me again. It had been a very long time ago, but I had no indication he’d be happy to see me now. In fifteen years I hadn’t heard a single word from Peter. Not even when he’d nearly died saving the world... twice. Like the rest of the world I’d watched my brother’s battles on television. Then one day I get a wedding invitation in the mail. The friends and family of Peter Joseph Venkman and Dana Elizabeth Barrett-Wallance request your presence.... The return address was listed as 14 North Moore Street, and there was a R.S.V.P. number, 1-212- NO GHOSTS. When I called, a woman answered. "Ghostbusters..." "Hello? I’m responding to the wedding invitation I received..." "Hold on a sec." She told me, and I heard papers shuffling. "Okay, name, please?" "Rebecca Reynolds." I replied. After a few moments she spoke again. "I’m sorry, I don’t see your name on the list." "Maybe it’s under Rebecca Venkman, my maiden name." I said, looking at the envelope. It had been addressed to Rebecca Reynolds, so he knew I’d been married. "Oh, you’re related to Dr. Venkman?" She asked. "I’m his sister." "Really? I didn’t know he had any family... and I’m still not seeing your name. Hold on a sec." She replied and put me on hold. The song ‘Brick House’ by The Commodores played as I waited for her to come back, but she never did. A familiar voice did instead. "Bec? Is it really you?" Ray Stantz asked me, sounding as if he couldn’t believe it. "It’s really me, Ray. How are you?" I replied. It was good to hear his voice. "I’m doing great, hon! Janine says you got an invitation to the wedding. Are you coming?" "I don’t know. She said my name’s not on the list..." "I’m sure that’s just a mistake. You’ve got to come." "You really think Pete will be glad to see me?" "It’s his wedding day. He’ll be ecstatic to see you. Are you still living in town?" "Yeah." "You should come over and have dinner with us. To catch up. The day of the wedding will be too busy." Ray suggested. "I don’t know." "Come on..." "I might." "That’s not a no." "It’s a maybe. It depends on my son’s schedule." "You have a kid?" "I do." "Bring him along!" "We’ll see." I said, knowing full well I wouldn’t. Still, I’d been persuaded into coming down for dinner. I’d made sure my son was going to spend the night with his best friend, and I took a taxi into downtown Manhattan. The Ghostbusters logo shone brightly in the dark of night as I pressed a doorbell button. The butterflies did somersaults in my stomach as I waited for an answer. Finally, a smaller door within the door opened, and Egon Spengler stood backlit by the yellow light coming from inside. "You’re here." He said in his deep voice. "Hey, Spengs." I replied, feeling like my heart was trying to climb up my throat. "Am I too late for dinner?" I asked. "Ray and I were about to order. Please, come in." He said, standing aside to let me pass. "Watch your step." He cautioned, and his hand reached out to mine to steady me. As ours hands touched, I suddenly had the urge to bolt. I was crazy to think I could do this. It wouldn’t be fair to any of us. And then Ray saw me. His smiled eased my fears considerably, and, as he lifted me in a bear hug, I actually laughed. "Ahh! Ray! Put me down!" I giggled. "Wow! Look at you! Did you bring your kid?" Ray asked, sitting me back down on the floor. "He’s spending the night with his best friend." "Maybe next time." Ray said. "Maybe." I answered noncommitally. "I told Rebecca we were just about to order dinner." Egon said, closing the door back and locking it. "Yeah, we were thinking deep dish... you game?" Ray asked, leading me upstairs. "As long as there’s no anchovies." I agreed. "I’ll call it in." Egon said, heading over to a wall mounted phone. The upstairs area of the station was a curious mixture of bachelor pad and laboratory. There were arcade style video games and a pool table, but along the walls were shelves full of all manner of wires, tubes, tools and a bunch of stuff I couldn’t identify. One end of the room held a kitchen and a round table. There was a fireman’s pole right next to it and a doorway that led into a bedroom. Ray pulled a chair out for me and went to the fridge. "You want a beer or soda?" He offered. "I’ll have a soda, thanks. This place is nice... spacious. You all live here?" I questioned. "Just me and Eggy. Winston’s married and Peter and Dana are living together, too. What about you? You ever find anyone to tame you?" Ray asked, setting down two sodas and popping open a beer for himself. "I was married, but it was my son who tamed me, not Matt." "Matt’s your son?" "No, he’s my ex. My son is Aiden." "Wow, that’s wild. I can’t see you being a mother." Ray shook his head. "It’s not as tough as it should be. Aiden is an exceptional kid. We take care of each other, and he’s so smart... he’s already enrolled in college classes, and he’s only in the ninth grade. The school board is in discussions with Columbia about enrolling him full-time in the Fall on a scholarship." I boasted. "What’s his favorite subject?" Egon asked, joining us at the table. "He’s into a lot of stuff. He excels in the sciences and mathematics, but he loves history, like me. He’s really interested in archeology since he saw the Indiana Jones movies, but he does well in foreign languages, too." "Sounds like a real whiz kid." Ray grinned. "He is. He takes after his father." I replied. I’d said more about Aiden than I’d planned, but he was my world. It was hard not to speak about him. "What about you guys? You’ve never married or had children?" I directed the subject away from me. "I’m seeing a woman named Linda. Her family owns the pizzeria we usually order from, and you know Egon, he’s married to his work." Ray explained. "I’ve dated." Egon said, sounding uncharacteristically defensive about it. "Oh, yeah! I forgot you and Janine went out a couple times. That was ages ago. Janine’s married to Louis now. Which is good for them." Ray rambled. "So what about this Dana? Does she treat Peter good? What’s she like?" I asked them. "She’s a musician... the orchestral type. She’s great. She’s got a baby from her first marriage, but Pete’s nuts about her and Oscar. They’re all very happy together." Ray revealed. "That’s good. I still can’t believe he invited me. After Dad died... well, you guys were there. I didn’t think he’d ever forgive me." I said, taking a sip of my soda. "I don’t know why he hasn’t mentioned inviting you. He should know how excited we all are to see you. I mean you’re like a sister to me." Ray said. "I spent enough time with you guys." I laughed, and it was true. I’d trailed after Peter, Ray and Egon like a puppy. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
