"So, the only real issue could be the entrance way, once we enter this place?" Kirk asked as they slowly walked behind the group. The people of this planet were highly superstitious, and tradition dictated those coming into the main city were to pass through the archway of truths.
"Yes Captain, it is said in their history that the arch was gifted to them by the gods, and revealed enemies in their midst. They were thus able to stop a potentially fatal attack to the main city and so all who wish to come through must pass under its crystal gleam. Of course it was also used for other ceremonies, but this is the most notable." Spock gave the typical arch of the eyebrow from the last part as he recited it all from memory. Kirk nodded, he'd read it when Star fleet sent them this mission....okay well skimmed it, so he knew the gist anyhow.
"So if one of us has some bad mojo, this things gonna go hay day?" Spock gave him a look, as Kirk spoke.
"If by 'hay day' you mean go bad, then yes captain, though I am unfamiliar with this, mojo you speak of." Kirk couldn't help but laughed, earning odd looks from the three aliens ahead of them.
"Just an earth term, its not important for now, so whats plan if things go bad?" Kirk's face went serious, he was all jokes, but when it came to his and his crews safety, he took things very seriously.
"I'll contact Scotty to beam us up and we negotiate over comm." Kirk nodded "Well then, lets get this show on the road," and before Spock could ask what it meant he moved to catch up with the group, Spock following hastily behind.
The large stone archway was crafted from a sort of white rock, it stood quite a bit taller then any man or woman, but the jewel was easily visible on its surface. It glinted in the sun almost menacingly, and oddly enough seemed to not hold one color for more then a moments time as they approached it.
The three leaders passed through the archway first and the stone glowed a soft and gentle blue color, by their reactions it was obviously the norm. Though as Kirk and Spock followed suit, it changed, flashing a pearly white color, putting the two immediately on edge. Spock's hand went to the communicator, ready to call Scotty at a moments notice, pride bloomed in Kirk's chest at Spock's reaction but he quickly shoved it aside to observe the reactions. Where he had been expecting anger, they seemed more....curious.
"Why did the jewel change color for me and Spock?" Kirk asked, eying them unsure now. It didn't seem that whatever was revealed was bad exactly, but it was very hard to tell what had occurred by their expressions alone.
"You have been given a great honor Captain Kirk and Commander Spock, our God has seen fit to give you a great blessing." The leader of the group said, smiling and waving them in, "We must go prepare you both for the celebration to come, tonight, you will dine as one of us!" They took this as a great compliment, and both relaxed, it would do this whole mission good for the natives to feel at ease around them. Though Spock seemed a bit unsure still, to Kirk's eyes anyway, he always got that tick in his jaw when something bothered him.
Spock put up a bit of resistance when the two were being separated, but Kirk reassured him that they were barely a few tents apart, if he needed help it wouldn't be hard to call for it. That was the last Kirk had seen of Spock all afternoon, and as night approached things finally seemed to starting. The afternoon had been spent cleansing Kirk, he had been soaked in a tub in cool water filled with many floral scents. By the evening he felt a bit like a giant flower, and that was when they massaged the oil on. Kirk had freaked at first, the woman giving no warning and he nearly jumped out of his skin. They had explained it was part of the ritual, once this was done he would be lightly clothed in deep red robes and be sent back to the archway to meet Spock.
By the time Kirk left the tent the two moons were high in the sky, and the walkway back to the arch had been decorated with torches and exotic smelling flowers. Kirk was escorted back to the arch, Spock was standing there already, clad in deep blue robes that lay loosely on his form. His oiled chest was visible even from where Kirk was as he approached, his gaze was heated, causing Kirk to falter in his steps.
"Captain, I am relieved to see you are well." Kirk nodded, flushing, he'd never seen Spock in anything as casual as this.
"This is certainly an odd ritual, what do you suppose their God is bestowing upon us anyhow?" His voice wavered a bit as he noticed one of their elders from before approaching. Before he had a chance to speak, the elder spoke, but none of it was in any language they knew, Kirk grew worried now. Spock seemed to sense the others unease and moved closer, it was moments like these Kirk realized how close him and his commander were, and he felt some comfort at the other being here.
The crystal began to glow, the same pearly white it had when the two originally walked under it, and both were suddenly assaulted with a sharp pain in their left wrists. Kirk cried out in surprise, holding his hand close and squeezing his eyes shut, Spock doing his best to school his own reaction, sweat beading on his forehead from the effort. As quickly as the pain started, it had stopped, in its wake leaving an odd sort of tattoo in a similar shape to the jewel, surrounded by swirls on both their wrists.
"It is done!" the elder exclaimed, the crowd of people cheering, Kirk hadn't even noticed them draw closer during this whole event. "Congratulations, you are fortunate indeed to receive our Gods blessing upon your union."
"Wait...union?" Kirk interrupted the elder, eyes widened. Spock stiffened at his side, his eyes darting to the marking on his wrist.
"Yes, the jewel sensed your bond, and we have not had a marriage in some time blessed by our gods, this will bring much joy to our people. A sign of good things to come between our people and yours" He replied with a large smile, patting Kirk on the back before wandering off to the apparent after party. Spock was silent, and Kirk was afraid for a moment he would see disgust on his old friend's face, if anything Spock seemed relieved.
"I can tell you one thing Captain, I won't be the one to tell our dear friends, as you would say, we got 'hitched'." A slow smirk settled on Spock's features as he said this, causing a bark of laughter to come from Kirk.
"I assure you Commander Spock, I will take immense joy in telling Bones all about it."
