The sun was just beginning to rise over the tops
of the mountains as she stood at the front of the cave, starring at the snow
covered grounds below. She swallowed as she looked out across the desert floor,
snow in the middle of California was unheard of, but as she stood there her
arms crossed over her chest she decided it was what she needed. Today was the
day, the one when she was going to run from him. Demetrius, he was the
man that had kidnapped her from her home and held her captive within the cave
for as long as she could remember. She fought to keep her shiver contained
biting her bottom lip her mind wracked with thoughts of the man that was
holding her hostage. Man, she thought bitterly, more like a monster.
“Today.” She whispered reaching up to touch her
fingers to the fresh bite marks on the side of her neck, wincing as she pressed
a little too hard on the tender skin, “today, I’ll be free.” Swallowing she
placed one foot in front of the other, not daring to look back as she stepped
into the sun for the first time in a century. After the first few steps the
others got easier leading her further and further away from twenty-nine palms
California and the Russian vampire that had claimed her as his own.
Twenty miles later and her feet were blistered,
the sun sitting high in the sky burning her pale skin to a crisp. As if luck
would have it a few miles later a car pulled up next to her, the windows
rolling down to reveal three blond beach bums who were all smiling at her in a
way that was practically projecting their thoughts.
“Where are you headed sweet cheeks.” One of them
asked flashing her his teeth causing her to shudder.
“Santa Cruz.” She bit her bottom lip as she
glanced up at them through her thick black eyelashes. “Mind giving a girl a
ride?” she tilted her head to the side her hand resting on her hips praying to
whatever higher power existed that she was flirting correctly. It had been
years since she had been around another human that wasn’t in the cave
specifically for feeding purposes and hadn’t been killed off moments after
having entered into her home. The blond boy chuckled before opening the door for
her and climbing into the back seat leaving the front one for her.
“I’m Mitch.” He said extending his hand towards
her. She smiled and shook his hand but didn’t offer her name; instead she
turned and focused her attention out the window. She feared, Demetrius would
come after her, she was his, and he had made that point to her many times over,
each one with a new cut a new scar a new reminder but as she sat their looking
out the window at the passing desert she knew she wouldn’t have to fear just
yet. It was still day time, Demetrius wouldn’t even know that she was gone
until sunset, then though it was just a matter of time. Swallowing she forced
herself to close her eyes, to relax as every hour that passed the car put
eighty more miles between her and her own personal hell. Sure she feared that
the teenage boys might hurt her, rape her then leave her for dead in the middle
of the desert but as she curled further into herself in the small leather seat
she decided that she didn’t care. Anything that they did couldn’t be anywhere
close to what Demetrius had in store for her.
Several hours later and she was being woken to a
light pink sky and the bright lights of the Santa Cruz boardwalk. With a smile
at the driver she opened the door and stepped out into the last bit of light,
her legs wobbly and half asleep causing her to stumble.
“So is there anywhere we can take you out here
sweetheart?” she heard one of the beach bums question, his eyes on her ass. She
turned, her ice blue eyes fixed on the boy, Mitch, she faintly remembered him
introducing himself as before smirking.
“Family.” She reached up running her fingers back
through her while blond hair pulling it over her shoulder. “I’m going to visit
family, you don’t have to take me anywhere.” And then she was walking away from
them her head held high as she disappeared into the crowd.
Two blocks later and she was sure that she wasn’t being
followed, the tingling at the base of her spine had all but stopped so she knew
that nobody wad watching her, that she was blending into the crowd just as she
wanted too. She bit her bottom lip looking around the boardwalk, turning her
body in a circle as she eyed the rides with something akin to disinterest. It was
then as she stood in the crowd that she saw them. They were all pale in their
own way; even the darker skinned one seemed to have a paleness about him. They were
tall as well, built in all the right places, a smirk just hinting at trouble
gracing their beautiful almost inhuman looking features.
She shuddered frozen as she instinct kicked in,
her body wanting to run, her mind screaming to stay and fight. She swallowed as
they climbed off of the carousel, her eyes locking with the man at the front of
the group. She let out a slow breath squeezing her eyes shut as she whispered
the one word that she had been fearing since she had gained the courage to step
out of the cave that very morning, Vampire. It was in that same moment
that the man at the front stepped forward as well his blue eyes narrowing to
stare at the woman who haunted his dreams more often then he was willing to
admit, his lips curling into a sneer as she spat her name, “Natalya.”
