P.S. I was getting sick of all these fic’s characterization of Sarah and Jareth... and in the way they kind of let the magic of it all go. So... here’s my remedy to that.
”Yet from those flames No light, but rather darkness visible.”
John Milton
She was so... beautiful.
A gentle breeze flowed easily through the open window and in to the small room. Other than the soft whirring noise it created and the light tapping of the curtain draw string on the window... all was quiet. The night’s darkness had descended at it’s usual time... though it always seemed to take longer with each passing day...
Jareth’s life had become nothing more than waiting... waiting for the darkness. During the day he was bound to the underground with nothing to cling to but the feelings that tore at him relentlessly. All because of her. She had beaten him... had broken him. How very ironic this all was... for he had fought so hard to own her, when in the end she was the one who owned him. She was his obsession, his life, his light in the darkness that he clutched so tightly to himself. He waited each day for the sun to set in her world so that he might go to her.
Sarah...
He watched her sleep restlessly... longing so much to touch her. Just once... but he couldn’t. He could never touch her again; those were the rules. She had bested him at his own game and in doing so had won the privilege to live out the rest of her life without him. In peace.
Jareth did not stand nor did he sit... he was merely just there. His presence. His essence. The very part of him that made up who he was... the part of him that was so drawn to her. It was a concept he had tried, on several occasions, explaining to one of his mortal pets or even one of his goblin constituents... but to no avail. He had given up and had not tried for nearly a hundred years. Sarah would understand. He knew she would. The pretty young woman who feigned sleep so expertly before him was also so very intelligent. So odd that he had found his match - his equal - in a mortal girl. He did not know what love was - could not understand it... but he knew that a piece of his soul resided within her. It was only near her that he could feel complete, and without her... he felt dead. By turning down his offer of her dreams she had condemned him to an eternity of emptiness and agony.
So night after night... he returned to her.
Come back to me...
The words were whispered though Jareth did not speak.
Sarah’s eyes fluttered for a moment and then opened as they always did. For a year now... this was their nightly ritual. He was there, but not there... and she could always sense him. Could always hear him... but could never see him or feel him. It was a bond they shared... and it terrified her beyond words.
Sitting up slowly, Sarah took a deep breath.
“No.” She whispered her part. It was never any different. Always the same. He’d ask her to come back to him... ask her in his ethereal way. She heard him speak though no sound was made... as though the request came from her own mind. Then she would say no. Always no. They both knew the answer would never change, yet here he was again. There had been times when Sarah would think about their nightly exchange and wonder if it was all just her imagination - or worse, if she was going insane. But when night fell again and she could feel his presence as sure as she could feel the blanket wrapped around her, she knew it was real.
You know you belong with me... The silent and ghostly pleading continued on as she knew it would. Sarah struggled to keep her breathing steady as she swallowed.
“I don’t.” She said so softly that she might not have said it at all.
You don’t belong to this world...
“I do.”
The silence seemed to stretch out the length of a short eternity and Sarah dared not move. Her heart pounded furiously in her chest and she wondered if she would ever become used to this. The fear she felt that he might one day drag her back to the underground despite her refusing him over and over again was nearly overwhelming. She didn’t understand his world and was not sure if he could do it or not... but the very real possibility of it nearly paralyzed her with terror.
And would he ever reveal himself to her again? Would she ever truly come face to face with the hauntingly beautiful Goblin King that possessed her thoughts both day and night once more? Would she ever again gaze in to those odd mismatched eyes?
She prayed every night that she wouldn’t.
After a long moment that might have lasted forever... the final words that Sarah knew were coming entered in to her mind like a fine mist hovering over her consciousness.
Come back to me... Please, Sarah...
She had only one more word to speak before this dose of nightly terror was over. He would recede back in to his darkness, back underneath her, back where he knew she would never follow...
Sarah swallowed again - risking placing her hand over her heart as though that would do anything to slow it’s beating. With all the courage she had... she opened her mouth to speak.
“No.” She said firmly.
And the Goblin King was gone.
