A/N: This is
a slash story, so if you don't like that don't read it. I just
watched Troy for the first time in a long while and what can I say
the plot bunny struck. The story will be
movie-verse, since I only read the Iliad once and can't remember all
that much. Feedback would be very much appreciated, to help me get
better and keep the story as in character as possible. I also need a
beta reader, so if anybody is up for the job, just contact me.
Chapter 1
– Heroes will last forever
“I knew they would come for you. Long before you
were born I knew they would come. They want you to fight in Troy.”
Turning away from her son Thetis bent down to pick up more shells,
momentarily lost in studying their beauty. “I'm making you
another seashell necklace. Like the one I made you, when you were a
boy. Do you remember?”
“Mother, tonight I decide.”
“If you stay in Lárisa you will find a
wonderful woman. You will have sons and daughters and they will have
children. And they will love you. When you are gone, they will
remember you. But when your children are dead and their children
after them your name will be lost. If you go to Troy immortal glory
will be yours...”
Achilles turned away from his mother, his gaze suddenly
focused on far off lands and the immortality that awaited. “Then
you know what my decision will be.”
Gently reaching out and stroking her hand over
Achilles' cheek Thetis brought her son's face around, looking in his
eyes as she continued to speak. “Do not decide before you have
heard me out. If you follow the Greeks to Troy great victories will
be yours, but glory does not come without a price. Friends you love
and treasure will be lost to you forever.”
“There are always losses in...”
“Shh...” Before the warrior could complete
his sentence his mother placed her fingers over his lips, silencing
him instantly. “A great war it will be and it's heroes will be
remembered for all eternity, Greek and Trojan alike. If you fight for
Agamemnon your friends will be lost and your glory will be
overshadowed by your grief. But if you join the side of the Trojans,
glory will not be your only reward. Think about it my beloved son. If
not for your own sake, then at least for the sake of those you hold
dear.”
And then she was gone, a faint wetness remaining on
Achilles' cheek where his mother's lips had kissed him, a fragile
seashell necklace clutched in his strong
hand.

Achilles sat on the ground, not far away from the
ruined temple he often used to train his cousin. Even now the
clashing of wooden swords echoed through
the otherwise silent afternoon as Patroclus and another of the
younger Myrmidons trained.
But Achilles payed no heed to their playful
battle, his mind far away over the Aegean sea, thinking about the
city of Troy and the words his mother had spoken. It was a strange
unfamiliar feeling, his heart being torn and at a loss about what the
right decision would be. After all he was a warrior and not a great
philosopher. He rushed to battles when he was called to them,
fighting whatever opponent he faced to gain immortal fame.
But be that as it may he was still a Greek and he felt
that fighting for the Trojans would be a betrayal of everything he
had lived for and the victories he had won in the past. And yet
Achilles couldn't quench the small voice in his heart that asked him
about the betrayal to his friends, that asked him if he would really
sent them to their deaths even though he could so easily spare their
lives by fighting for Troy.
It asked him if he could watch his dear cousin fall to
the ground, blood spurting from his wounds, if he could live with
seeing the youth for whom he had become a father figure since his
parent's death dying in the sands of Troy. Achilles knew himself to
be strong, but he wasn't certain that he would be strong enough to
overcome such pain.
As deeply lost in his thoughts as he was the great hero
hadn't noticed that the sounds of the playful
fight had quietened, absolute silence ruling the sun
drenched plateau. He was unawares of the two young warriors
approaching him from behind, both of them trying to stifle
their giggles and not alert Achilles to their presence.
A small sound of surprise almost escaped his throat as
he was attacked from behind, two bodies pinning him to the ground as
a sword was pressed against his throat. Rudely ripped out of his
musings his instincts immediately told him to fight, but before he
could strike out in blind defense Patroclus' voice rang through the
air.
“The great Achilles has been defeated by
Patroclus and his faithful companion,
Antiphonus.” Laughter was filling the youth's voice as he
looked down at his famous cousin, grinning broadly. Achilles couldn't
help the slight smile that spread over his features before he threw
the two young Myrmidons off with an elegant twist of his body, giving
chase as they tried to escape their punishment for having interrupted
his musings.
His decision had been made.

Eudorus was glad when he finally found Achilles at
Phtia's small harbor. His leader had called for him quite some time
ago but until now he hadn't been able to find the golden-haired hero.
He let his footsteps echo on the stones that made up the pier
Achilles stood on, announcing his presence to his leader before he
stopped beside him. “You called for me, my lord?”
“Have the men prepare a ship. We are sailing for
Troy tomorrow.” Achilles seemed
unfazed by the puzzled look that momentarily flickered over Eudorus'
features. His whole attention was focused on the horizon, where the
sun was just sinking below the waves, tinting the water red as blood.
“What is it, Eudorus?”
Knowing Achilles long enough to speak his thoughts
freely the Myrmidon's second-in-command asked: “Shouldn't we be
sailing to Sparta to meet with Agamemnon's fleet instead of sailing
to Troy ahead of them?”
“We will not be fighting for Agamemnon.”
The sun had just dipped beyond the horizon, darkness swiftly
replacing the last rays of light. The puzzlement on Eudorus' face was
still clearly visible to Achilles and he expected the other man's
speech.
“But if we aren't fighting for Agamemnon,
then...”
Turning his face to his longtime companion
and friend Achilles said: “We will be fighting for what we
always fight for: immortal glory. And when this war is over it will
be ours. Do you trust my judgment,
Eudorus?”
The dark-haired Myrmidon's eyes had started to glitter
at the mention of immortal glory and they were still doing so when he
answered. “Always, my lord.”
“Then go and have the men prepare a ship. I want
to sail with the morning tide.” Bowing slightly Eudorus hurried
away, leaving Achilles alone to stare at the now dark and silent
waters, hoping that he had made the right decision.

When the Trojan coast finally came into view Achilles
could slowly feel the anticipation of his troops rising. They were
ready to join Troy, to fight whatever battle Achilles led them to.
For him they would fight against their fellow Greeks and send them
over the river Styx to maybe meet them again at a later time.
Eudorus and Patroclus were at his side as the ship
plowed into the soft sand of the beach, his men immediately jumping
out to guard the perimeter. But there were no Trojan troops
in sight. Achilles would have thought that they would guard their
beach more fiercely, but maybe they did not see a single ship as a
great danger. Telling his men to take a flag with the sign of Eirene
with them he started marching up the sand dunes towards the temple of
Apollo and the plains of Troy that lay beyond it.
Finally able to see the great city in the distance he
heard gasps of awe and wonder amongst his men as they gazed at the
high walls of Troy. Achilles too was amazed, but he wasn't showing it
on his face. A truly magnificent city. It would have been a great
victory to conquer this fortress, but alas his decision had been
made.
In the distance he could hear alarm bells ringing, so
obviously their presence hadn't remained undetected. Good. Achilles
would have been insulted if they hadn't at least been recognized as a
small threat. Commanding his men to raise the flag of Eirene he
halted before the walls of Troy.
