”He who lives without the one he loves is living with out the most important piece of himself. He can never truly be whole.”
- Cole Ross
First there was a fall... and then there was darkness. Darkness seeming to span out the length of an eternity. Silence. Rest. In a life full of war, secrecy, and heartache, the peace that seemed to spiral out from the darkness may have been subconsciously welcomed. Perhaps... needed.
But then there were the dreams. Memories, thoughts, whispers of... her. The woman that owned and possessed him without ever having tried, or perhaps even wanted. She invaded his thoughts, his peace.
His darkness.
She was calling to him... laughing. Running away. A game. Except as soon as he had become aware of the game, the game no longer existed. She sat sprawled out on a blanket in the meadow on Naboo. He could smell the faint wet smell of the waterfall as he fell to his knees in front of the woman he loved. The woman he knew he should not love - and she should not have loved him. The love they shared for each other was beyond what anyone else had ever felt and they both knew it would slowly eat away at them from the inside until nothing was left. They knew it, but could not pull away from each other. No, they loved each other too much for that. The salvation that seemed just out of reach had never been in reach.
Neither of them had ever wanted it.
He closed his eyes and leaned down in to his bride. Darkness began to slowly roll in again as his lips met hers - so warm and soft. He needed her. He needed her. He wished he didn’t. He wished he could be the obedient apprentice - never needing anything but what the force provided him with. Yet at the same time... he didn’t. A life with the woman he loved, however doomed... was worth everything.
First there was a cool rush of air which brought with it the musky scent of wet earth and subterranean foliage... Then came the sound of dripping water - or dripping something- from somewhere not too far away.
Padmé... The last breath of the comforting dream began to dissipate - giving way to conscious thought.
“Anakin...” Came the familiar fatherly voice. As always it sounded wise... cultured. Richly accented and steady. Yet, at the same time, it sounded somehow hollow. Fake.
Anakin opened his eyes slowly and flinched as a sharp pain stabbed at his forehead. As he attempted to adjust his vision to the near pitch black darkness, his hand instinctively went to the source of his pain. His fingers were met with a sticky cold fluid. Blood. He rolled it over his thumb and index finger for a moment, and then tried to push himself up to a sitting position against the dirt walls. From what he could tell, he appeared to be in a tunnel of some kind. The light breeze that had awaken him only moments before was coming from, what Anakin quickly guessed to be, another small tunnel that led in to the one he found himself in. He would have to find it to get out of here.
“Perfect,” he mumbled in annoyance to himself.
“Anakin, do you copy?” The familiar voice sounded again. Anakin creased his forehead and looked around for where it was coming from. He patted himself down for a confused few moments and then found his comlink exactly where it always was - in his belt. He swallowed and then pressed the small button on the device.
“Obi-Wan...” He started, his voice thick, as he looked around once again. He saw nothing new. “Where am I?” Where ever it was, he knew he must have been there a while. The blood on his head was already cold.
“Anakin.” Obi-Wan breathed a sigh of relief as the voice of his young apprentice and friend finally answered him. “I’m not exactly sure where you are at the moment. You were standing right behind me one second, and the next you were gone. Are you hurt?” Anakin touched his fingers to his cold wound once again and winced slightly. He took a deep breath and rolled his eyes at himself.
“I’ll live.” He answered.
“Can you tell me anything about where you are?” Obi-Wan asked, sounding almost as amused as he was concerned.
“Not much,” Anakin said as he looked around yet again. “It’s wet... and very dark. I think it’s some kind of tunnel system. If the separatist base is here as we have suspected, they may have been using these tunnels to get around under the radar.” Anakin furrowed his forehead and pushed himself up on to his feet with some effort - only to collapse a moment later.
“Perhaps it--”
“Gah.” Anakin let out the unexpected groan of pain as his leg suddenly felt as though it were on fire.
“-- and I think it would be wise for you to stay where you are until we get a clue as to where exactly that is.” Obi-Wan continued uninterrupted. Anakin pressed the button on his comlink , and breathing unsteady he spoke.
“Obi-Wan...” He said, then winced in pain as he moved his leg again. “I’m hurt worse than I thought.”
“What is it?” Obi-Wan asked, concern lacing his words.
“My leg.” He said, then shook his head. “I think it’s broken.”
“Brilliant.” His master said monotonously. “Honestly, Anakin, I think we might be awarded a medal if we could somehow manage a mission without one of us injuring ourselves or being knocked unconscious.” Anakin swallowed as the throbbing in his leg amplified each moment.
“I think that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, Master.” He said - employing his knowledge of the force to aid him in focusing away from the pain. “Neither of us got hurt on that mission on Kadi Yindo.” This comment was met with laughter by Obi-Wan.
“Just a fluke, I suppose.” Anakin laughed shortly. The true fact of the matter was that, though they did seem to have their fair share of mishaps, they were quite good at what they did. In Anakin’s case - perhaps - a little too good. When someone got comfortable with their own infallibility, too arrogant... that’s exactly when mistakes happened. Anakin sighed.
“I need a vacation.” He mumbled to himself as he looked up - an image of Padmé flashed before his eyes and was usual for times when he thought of having time away from the order. The familiar sting of emptiness pierced through his heart, and - though he hated to do it - he pushed all thoughts of Padmé away. He could not think of her. Not now. Thoughts of her rendered him incapacitated, and he had to have all his wits about him. He narrowed his eyes at something in the roof of the tunnel - about ten feet up. He pressed the little button once again. “There’s a small hole in the tunnel just above me. I can see light coming through. I think that’s where I--”
“I think I see--” Suddenly the very area that Anakin had been looking at seemed to cave in and then seal itself right back up again. Dirt hung in the air making it difficult to breath and Anakin was coated with it. He coughed and held his comlink to his mouth.
“Obi--” Another cough. “Wan. Something just happ--” A groan emitted from whatever had fallen from the roof silenced Anakin. He poked it with his uninjured foot and received another groan in reply. He focused his eyes as best he could through the darkness - just enough to make out the outline of his master. “Obi-Wan?” He asked, then looked back up from where Obi-Wan had just come crashing down from. “Guess we know how I got here.”
Obi-Wan said nothing for a few long moments and then took a deep breath.
“I need a vacation.”
The room was pleasant and airy. Padmé had seen to the interior decoration herself. If she was going to have an apartment in the capital, then it would have to feel like home. It would have to be comfortable and soft - as opposed to what she had come to think of the city as. Hard. Tense. If she could not be on Naboo as much as she would have liked, then she had to have a place where she could feel safe. She needed it.
Especially now... now that she was a new bride and so scared that she could lose everything in a moment.
“Chancellor,” Padmé said to her old friend who sat across from her. “I do appreciate your concern, but I do not need a body guard. There have been no attempts on my life since the battle of Geonosis.”
“Yes, my dear, but that was nearly four months ago. You can never be sure of what someone might plan in that length of time.” The gray haired man responded in a nearly pleading tone of voice. Padmé smiled warmly. It was true what she had said. She did appreciate his concern... but she couldn’t help but be bothered by it as well. She wondered when people would stop treating her as though she were nothing more than a little girl. She had been Queen of her planet by the time she was thirteen. She fought in the Battle of Theed and the Battle of Geonosis along side those who thought they had to take care of her. She was quite a capable woman if anyone would take the time to notice it.
“I can assure that I am quite safe here on my own.” She said, ever the diplomat, managing to keep any trace of agrivation out of her voice. Chancellor Palpatine sighed.
“Or perhaps I can persuade the Jedi council to assign Master Kenobi to see to see to your security once again.” He paused. “Or young skywalker?” He added almost knowingly. Padmé was quite unnerved by that for a moment, but then pushed the thought that Palpatine could know about her and Anakin away. It was impossible.
“Master Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are doing far more important things than protecting me, Chancellor.” Padmé said - trying to keep her expression from betraying her. She had always found it difficult to conceal things from those who she trusted, but in this case it was imperative. Palpatine tiled his head.
“Well, I do not know what Jedi do while on leave, but I certainly cannot believe that it would be more important than protecting you.” The man said with a small incredulous laugh. Padmé swallowed. Had she heard right?
“Leave?” She asked. The Chancellor nodded.
“Oh, of course you would not have heard.” He smiled. “It seems that both Kenobi and Skywalker have been granted two weeks leave from duty. I suspect they should be back on Coruscant in a day’s time.” At these words, Padmé had to fight herself to stay composed. She forced her expression to remain neutral even as her heart and mind rejoiced. Two weeks leave!
Anakin was coming back to her.
It was odd to think that, after a life time spent functioning just fine on her own, she could no longer imagine being just Padmé Naberrie. Anakin was a part of her now, and she missed him desperately. Sometimes she could hardly breathe. She had not seen him since they were married and her heart ached more painfully for him each night. Though she was still getting used to the thought of being a wife, she needed no time in getting used to having Anakin by her side. Those few days spent on Naboo before Anakin left to fight were the best days Padmé had ever experienced. Since then, without her husband’s warmth, she had felt only half alive. She had lost count of how many nights she had cried herself to sleep... not to mention the nights where sleep had remained elusive to her all together.
“... This is welcome news, then?” The Chancellor asked - bringing Padmé out of her reverie. She looked him in the eyes and swallowed - wishing she could tell him just how welcomed the news was.
“Of course.” She said with a smile, much the same as the one she had given him earlier. “I shall look forward to seeing them while they are here.”
Anakin...
