Disclaimer: I do not own Four Brothers. If I did, Jack would not have died, just he have just been really, really hurt.
A/N: This story will also be available on ff.net as soon as they get their heads out of their asses and create a Four Brothers category because I refuse to post under Misc. Movies because it undermines the movie, which is why I suggested the category on aff.net. Anywho, without further adieu, on with the story, which is set a few years before the film.

Chapter One
Jack sat huddled in the corner of his small apartment, terrified that they might come back. He didn’t think he could stand it. It wasn’t the pain, no, he’d experienced pain before. He didn’t like the pain, but he had dealt with it before. It was about the sheer, unadulterated fear that gnawed at him during every waking moment. And even during the unwaking moments he was afraid. He was dead scared of the disgusting humiliation, the inevitable pain, and the ever-present threat of death.
Not that he never contemplated death before. He had even thought of killing himself to escape the never-ending nightmare that had become his life. But he couldn’t do that. Not after all Ma had done to ensure that his life didn’t come to a dead-end.
Ma. He needed her presence, needed her to tell him that it was all going to be okay, that he was truly safe again. But would he really be? He wasn’t some kid anymore. He couldn’t hang onto a mother’s apron strings. Besides, Evelyn Mercer couldn’t protect him, no matter how much she wanted to.
But he couldn’t stay here. They’d eventually get tired of him and kill him. He had to leave, and the only place he could go was Ma’s. He didn’t even know where Bobby and Angel were, and Jerry had just had another kid, he didn’t have time for his stupid little brother. He’d have to go to Ma’s, if only for a little while, until he found somewhere else. He couldn’t stay too long though. They would track him down, he knew they would. They would not let him get away unscathed.
He couldn’t let Ma know anything though. It would worry her to death. He’d have to deal with it on his own. The prospect was startling, he’d always had someone who would protect him by his side. Now, he was alone.
Yes, Jack was afraid.

“Jackie!”
“Ma!”
Evelyn Mercer was no fool. How could she be with all the children she had raised? She knew from the moment Jack had called her to announce is spontaneous visit that something was wrong. And now, as she looked into the face of her youngest son, she knew that she would get nothing out of him if she pried. Underneath his façade of joy for being home, she saw a glimpse of that terrified little boy that she had first set eyes upon. And it worried her.
However, she couldn’t let on that she knew anything was amiss, it would only cause him to either deny it fervently or bolt. So, she put on her best smile and welcomed him home with all the love in her heart. But she would keep an eye on him, praying that for once in her life, her instincts were wrong.
