Chapter
1 – Four weeks
Four weeks had passed since Ahm-Shere. Four weeks since
he had defeated the Scorpion King. Four weeks since his wife had
died. Four weeks since she had returned from the dead. Four weeks
that somehow hadn't gone like he had ever imagined.
Rick O'Connell was sitting in his living
room and swirling a glass of whiskey in his hand. He listened
to the ice cubes click on the sides of the glass as he thought about
the last weeks.
Ever since they returned from Ahm-Shere Evy had changed.
Not noticeably at first, but over the time
it had gotten ever stronger. She became distant from him, refused his
kisses, spoke with him less and less and since the beginning of this
week she had totally avoided him. At first Rick had attributed it to
the shock of having died and thought that it would get better over
the weeks. But it hadn't. Instead she had also begun to avoid Alex
and Jonathan.
Rick was at a complete loss, what he should do. The kind
and good-hearted woman he had fallen in love with, had somehow turned
cold-hearted and mean. He remembered the happiness he had felt, when
she had been alive after Ahm-Shere, but when he thought about his
wife now he felt only apprehension and unease. Rick was sure that he
still loved her, only the extend of his love had diminished.

He was so emerged in his thought, that he didn't even
hear his wife enter the room. Just as he heard the heavy thud of two
suitcases being set down, Rick looked up. The first thing he noticed,
was that her clothing was unusual. She wore a dress, that was
designed in Egyptian style, instead of her
usual pants and blouse.
“Where are you
going?”
She didn't even turn around and a frown spread over
O'Connell's face. Whatever he had expected to happen, it wasn't that
she would simply ignore him.
“Evy, where are...”
He wasn't able to finish the sentence, as he suddenly
found himself face to face with his wife. She was holding one of her
Egyptian daggers to his throat and hissing
at him venomously.
“Don't ever call me
that. I am Nefertiri, Daughter of Pharaoh.
I do not speak to something insignificant as you.”
Having spoken so she got up and went over to pick up her
suitcases again. Rick felt extremely confused, but tried to shed some
light on what was going on.
“Nefertiri? You
were Nefertiri in a former life. Now you are Evy O'Connell, my wife.”
As the dark-haired woman laughed, Rick felt a shiver run
down his spine. She didn't sound like his wife at all.
“Evy O'Connell?
Yes, that is the name of the body I inhabit. She died in Ahm-Shere
and when her soul returned from the after-life I returned with her.”
Looking completely confused Rick just stared at her,
unable to form a real question.
“She is gone now.
It took me some time to gain control of her body, but now her soul is
completely destroyed and her body is mine.”
Rick shook his head in denial. This couldn't be true.
Evy had to still be in there. He wanted to make a move towards his
wife, but he couldn't get his body to obey.
“You can not stop
me. I shall go and Egypt shall rise again as it once was. I shall
rule as Pharaoh.”
With these words she walked out the door.

Rick was completely dumbstruck. He couldn't do anything,
but stare after the creature, that had taken over his wife. Yet he
didn't really believe, what the thing had told him. Evy had to be
there, had to be inside this body somewhere.
Before he could follow her, Alex appeared at the top of
the stairs.
“Dad? Where has Mom
gone?”
Putting his head in his hands and shaking it, Rick
answered his son.
“I don't know.
Probably Cairo.”
“She has been
acting strange.”
Jonathan had appeared too.
“Yes, I know. She
just told me, that she isn't Evy, but Nefertiri.”
“Oh, something must
have gone wrong with the ritual at Ahm-Shere.”, Alex sounded
somehow panicked.
“Yes, I think so.
Alex, Jonathan get what you need. We'll follow her and get Evy back.”
Both his son and his brother-in-law didn't question him,
but simply rushed to their rooms to get their luggage. Rick was
planning to fly to Cairo and get her there. Somehow they had to get
Evy back, no matter how.

At the same time it was already night in the small oasis
south of Cairo. The Med-jai village there was small, yet most of the
remaining tribes lived there. Since Imhotep had fallen into the
Underworld at Ahm-Shere, they weren't required to guard Hamunaptra
anymore, so the remaining warriors had all returned to the village.
The tribes had traditionally lived far apart, but since there
were so few of them now, they had moved closer together.
Ardeth Bay, leader of the Med-jai, abruptly sat up in
his bed.
Four weeks since Ahm-Shere. Four weeks without
undisturbed sleep. Four weeks filled with dreams.
The Med-jai shook his head, before getting out of bed.
Crossing the small hut, he took the washcloth from the small basin
filled with cool water. Swiping it over his hips he washed away the
evidence of his dream like almost every night since four weeks
Getting back to bed, he lay on his back and stared at
the ceiling. It was still early in the night and he definitely needed
the sleep. But at the moment he wouldn't be able to find any as his
thoughts were swirling around in his head.
'Get over it. It's never gonna happen. He is married for
Heaven's sake.'
Ever since Ahm-Shere he couldn't get rid of the image of
Rick O'Connell that plagued his dreams. They were pleasurable, but
stupid none the less. Although same sex relationships weren't
forbidden amongst his people, they were frowned upon. But that didn't
matter at all, because O'Connell was married, had a son and loved his
wife.
'It will pass. It did the last time.'
Ardeth had already had a hard time forgetting O'Connell
after their first adventure at Hamunaptra. But after some weeks of
not seeing the man his desire had faded, until he only occasionally
dreamed of him. His duty of guarding the city of the dead had also
helped with that.
But now it was back full force. He couldn't get a decent
night of sleep ever since he had seen O'Connell again. As long as
they were worried about O'Connell's son, Imhotep and the Scorpion
King it hadn't been so hard to keep the longing under control. And
then he had to gather his tribes and tend to the losses. But now he
had nothing to do to get his thoughts off the subject.
Sighing he closed his eyes again and tried to get back
to sleep.
