Author’s note- This will be quite a lengthy thing…I have a plot bunny that’s telling me this is gonna be great, and he won’t go away! So stick with me, enjoy, read and review, and get ready for a fun retelling! Jack will show up later, as well as Gillette and other surprises! It takes place 2 months after the original POTC, and has French Dutchess Vanessa Abernathy rescued after a late night riot on an island, and now aboard the Commodore's ship...throughout the story, they will begin a torrid affair, as well as other happenings! Enjoy again!
Vanessa Katherine Abernathy watched the island move farther away behind her on the horizon. She watched it silently as it’s once large, mountainous form turned gradually into a speck of green, almost as small as one of the single blades of grass residing upon it. Vanessa tried to take her gaze away from the island, but immediately found she could not.
Five important years of her life were spent there. She was thirteen when she was first left behind there, and now eighteen while being carted away. But there seemed to be peace in the crossing, she could feel it. A few tears rolled down her pale cheeks, a little sadness present as well to bade goodbye to the place where she matured hardily on the elements of nature from girl to woman. But most of her emotions were now those of wonder and curiosity.
She must have been asleep when she had been taken, or perhaps even knocked out. She pondered how she had gotten on the ship underneath her, and what circumstances had led to it, for she couldn’t remember naught a single thing. Perhaps in a few moments when she’ll start to sort things out, she thought further. She had only woken up a few moments earlier and walked from her bedroom quarters, very modest ones at that, to the stern of the boat, where she was presently presiding. So many questions began to flood her mind, and all at once, each one fighting for her attentions. Vanessa put a hand on her forehead, almost feeling faint, so many different directions at once…if she could only remember a tiny bit about last night. A simple phrase, a word perhaps…just a clue pertaining to what went on…
She began to think again, addressing a few questions, but none that she could answer…
Hadn’t her mother and father tried to look for her? She was worried, not to mention a bit confused. It had been years since she was taken from her home and placed from predicament to predicament so carelessly and harshly. Why had this rescue taken so long and was it even meant to happen? The flag sailing from the ship’s crow’s nest was undoubtedly British, it couldn’t have been a ship under her parent’s command, for they were French. Where were her parents now and when would she get to be reunited with them? Oh, how she missed them. So much, really, it almost hurt.
But she missed the people back on the island too, and that hurt as well. She glanced back toward the direction on which the island lay, but the island was too far away to make out much of anything by the time her eyes fell back upon it. And so she thought of them, feeling the tears well in her burning eyes yet again. The people, dark in skin tone, light in spirit, forever loving and accepting of her, their stranger, yet so primitive and naïve at the same time. They had welcomed her heartily no matter how differently she looked and despite the fact that she had never been able to explain her plight and have them understand at the same time. They had taught her so much, the ways of the sword being one of them, among others, and suddenly, without explanation they became the people she yearned to be back with that very moment. And she felt guilty for replacing her own parents with them, but it was hard to accept that they were floating backwards, away and out of her life, just like before she knew them. Without her getting to express how much they meant to her. No ‘Thank Yous“ …no love declarations. How she wished at the moment she had gotten the chance to express herself… but she would not. When she looked back again, the island had disappeared.
To hell with this ship she was on, she contemplated angrily to herself, a scowl for sure on her face, she knew, but she had no mirror to see it. She didn’t have to. She didn’t care if it was her rescue ship or not, she hardly wanted it. She had learned to cope with the fact long ago that she was most likely lost to her parents and possibly would not be rescued. She’d at the same time grown content of the ways of Toumgamay, her island. The little huts, so simple, as all the ways and traditions were there, nightly bonfires embedded in her mind’s eye, and the ceremonies, happy and sad, occurring every day. Everything she had grown to love, everything she had shared in with her people like a family, the family she was violently taken from, had disappeared on the horizon in the shaded orange-yellow glow of the rising sun.
Vanessa rubbed her eyes, and wiped another stray tear away from her right cheek. Memories she had tried to forget streamed back to her slowly of the raid that brought her to that very island in the first place. Mutiny, arguments, swearing, fights. She was surrounded by cruel, intolerable men who all had constant scowls and treated her like dirt. Pirates. Then all of a sudden, silence. Faces of fear, all among the men as a ghostly black ship with tattered, black sails came into view, almost out of nowhere. Panic, screams, chaos. Escape attempts, and she was mixed in the middle, with no one at all caring about what happened to her in the outcome. A flash of light. Vanessa jumped with rope-bound hands overboard, hurling herself into the warm, salty sea, frantically kicking away. A blast as the ship from which she had just been standing on sprayed into millions of fiery embers in a rapid explosion as bright as the sun. She had ducked underwater to escape and protect herself from the hurled debris…She had been the only survivor. The only one from the attacked ship to make it alive and go on. She looked back, and the mysterious black ship disappeared back into the mists of night fog from whence it came.
Then the island. After a night of frightened and exhausted struggle to swim amongst her confusion and tears, she had reached the shore. The people, the stares. And then she was one of them. First impression apprehension led to mutual appreciation and welcome. Their adoration allowed her sanity to stay intact and she became their muse and they became her own. She gave them propriety and in return she had been given so much more. She, being a young girl, couldn’t offer very much, but it was all the emotions that they shared. Nonmaterial qualities that became the most important ones, and the ones that they received from her. Fortitude, bravery, strength, and kindness. They gave her abilities to fight, how to understand, without having to speak the same words, but instead, within thinking the same thoughts, and how to appreciate. She was thankful for them and to them, which was why she was so saddened upon leaving without having spoken her mind. Sadness again engulfed her insides, and she could feel the burning of the tears in her eyes yet again, but this time she fought them until they had subsided quite a bit. “I must be strong,” she thought to herself, “tough”. Like she learned, and was trained to be like. This day was a long time coming, and she knew she must just live with it and take it like the grown-up she was; to see the positive in it as well. But still, she wished this day, and the events within it hadn’t been.
Vanessa rubbed her eyes one last time with the back of her dainty, yet roughly textured and filthy right hand, getting rid of the last of her tears, and the watery feeling in her eyes, while holding onto the rail of the stern steadily with her other hand.
“Excuse me, madam”, said a man’s deep voice behind her. She quickly turned and the new sun was so bright and startling to her eyes, she couldn’t see who was in front of her at first. Vanessa squinted and blinked the cloudiness from her line of vision and settled her nerves after jumping in surprise. When she had her tethered, disoriented self together at last, she looked before her, aware and ready to accept what was next to happen. What Vanessa saw in front of her was a man older than her, yet still fairly young, and ornately dressed nonetheless, standing at least 2 feet directly in front of her. She let a gasp escape her lips.
From then on, Vanessa could hardly restrain from staring. The man was deathly handsome. So handsome, in fact, Vanessa was agape. But she composed herself immediately at the thought that he was no doubt already spoken for, not to mention severely out of her league and reach.
Dressed in a British Royal Navy officer’s uniform, he looked important, yet so manly at the same time. He wore a large blue coat, which looked of a woolen material, or any other type of higher class and durable fabric. The coat had brass buttons down each side with loops and holes on each as well, although he had the jacket open to reveal an under vest that was stark white. The sleeves of the jacket were large, and billowed out when she could see them, and like much of the rest of the jacket, was trimmed in gold anywhere that had room to allow it. Everything the man wore that was white was the whitest shade of the color that Vanessa had seen in almost ages, living on a primitive island where washing clothes and bathing were far from necessities. He had a blouse on, also white, underneath the vest as well, and coming up from the undergarments was a white lace cravat, with frills cascading the whole way down. Vanessa scanned the rest of his body as well, although making sure to be quite quick about it, as she didn’t want to be labeled a rogue, or classify unladylike behaviors upon herself, looking below the belt like that. He wore white breeches, with tiny white laces tying them at his knees, and then, white stockings worn downward into his pair of silver- buckle adorned black heeled shoes. He had quite large feet at the bottom of skinny, sort of gangly legs; very slender, yet somewhat shapely as well. Vanessa was entranced still, and by having Navy knowledge from her father being the Duke of Colognia under French rule, and having seen many British Navy men in the past, in books and in person in the morgues after they’d been slain by her homeland’s soldiers, she had a good guess on the rank of the man that was standing before her. Also, the uniforms weren’t TOO contrasted between the two places, so she could pointedly guess and almost be positive just by looking at the medals dangling from the man’s neck, and the pins on his uniform, made of fine gold and silver, that this man before her was a Commodore, if not just an officer of high rank.
Vanessa glanced up from the mahogany boarded floor of the ship upwards into the man’s face.
