Anna
shivered in the damp night air as she walked the streets of Soho. She
didn't dare go back to the catacombs - she knew all she'd find were
rotting corpses... unless of course the police had gotten there first.
She clutched at her ragged coat, and walked on. Nearly all she could
think about was how she could get her next hit. The light seemed to
flicker, and she looked up.
The blue neon sign flickered again, then buzzed, returning to its previous
steady light. Valve. It seemed familiar, but she couldn't recall why.
The music pounded from within, a catchy techno beat vibrating the steel
doors. A couple stumbled out the doors, nearly knocking her to the ground.
The man pushed her aside, and she clutched at the wall. She looked up
at him, and he glared at her, then stumbled on. Something about his
look jolted her memory, reminding her of someone she once knew.
Billy.
The name reminded her of another - one more important. Garvey. He had
the gear. She trembled even further, her mind set on the craving. She
staggered round to the alleyway. There had to be a door somewhere. Billy
had told her that Garvey and his crew hung out at Valve, or at least,
that's what she could remember. She didn't have much money, and didn't
want to waste it on the cover charge, or a drink.
Light pooled in a small shimmer around a battered metal door tucked
into the brickwork. Anna reached for the knob, which turned slowly,
and with a lot of effort. She pulled, hoping that it would open. With
a groan, it did, revealing darkness. She paused for only a moment before
she moved in. The door shut behind her, leaving her in blackness. She
blinked, and slowly was able to see. At the end of a hallway, there
was a slight bluish glow. She walked towards it, her hands slowly relaxing
to her sides as she began to get warm.
The hallway opened onto the inside of Valve, next to a huge stainless
steel bar. Anna slipped into the crowd, dancing and gyrating. She wove
her way through the clutch of sweaty bodies, feeling somewhat conspicuous
in her tattered dark jacket and black trousers. She found her way to
the other side of the bar, and a discreet stairway. As she moved to
descend, a hand grabbed her arm in a vice-like grip.
"Where
you goin'?" a harsh, deep voice asked her. She turned, seeing a
thickly-built man in an apparently expensive suit.
"Need
to see Garvey," she said, trying to wrench her arm free. The man
smirked.
"One
of his playthings, are ya, girly?" he asked, rhetorically. "Well,
go on down then." He gave her a bit of a shove. She made her way
down the stairs, where an entirely different sort of music was playing.
It sounded old - something her parents might have played on their record
player when she was a kid. A man's voice, deep and rich, was singing.
...it's Witchcraft...
...and I've got no defense for it...
the heat is too intense for it...
what good would common sense for it do?...
If she'd felt out of place upstairs, here she definitely was. The clientele
was odd, that was the only way she could put it. She wouldn't have been
out of place if she'd stolen scrubs from the last clinic she'd been
in. Her eyes widened as she saw dentists chairs, and a bevy of rubber-clad
people in various states of undress.
"What
the fuck?" she murmured to herself. She couldn't bring herself
to move out from the stairway. She moved back into the half-darkness,
and sat with her knees pulled up to her chest. She listened to the voice
finish the tune, then start in on another equally soothing one. She
laid her head on her knees and closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth
and the music. Soon, out of exhaustion, she dozed off.Percy and his
henchmen were some of the last to leave the club - Prosthesis - that
night. He snapped his fingers idly as he sang a tune under his breath.
"Was
a good crowd tonight, eh boss?" one of the henchmen remarked, interrupting
Percy's singing. "You sure were good too, boss. Is that a new song
you've been working on?" Percy clenched his fist and cast a withering
glare at the man, who looked at him in surprise.
"S-sorry
boss," he stuttered.
"Don't
interrupt me again," Percy growled, his icy blue eyes seeming to
cut down his henchman dramatically. The three of them walked towards
the stairs leading to Valve. Percy was the first one to notice the slight
figure slumped against the wall. He was angry that his henchmen hadn't
seen it, and knew that their oversight would have to be remedied.
"Derek!
Robert!" he barked. "I thought you two swept this place for
undesirables!" The pair looked stunned.
"But
we did boss," Derek replied. Percy gestured to the dark-clad figure.
"Apparently
not well enough," he said coolly. The two beefy men immediately
went over and lifted a dozy and startled Anna to her feet. She hung
limply between them until the fog cleared from her mind. Then, she was
frightened and panicked. She struggled for a moment, quite ineffective
against their bulk.
"I
need to see Garvey," she said. She could feel the need for the
drugs coursing through her body, and she trembled.
"Garvey?
Well, he's not here. And neither should you be," Percy replied,
his eyes speculative.
"Garvey
gives me some gear," Anna explained tentatively. Percy smirked.
"I
see," he said. "Well my dear, perhaps you and I can come to
a deal..." He let the suggestion hang in the air between them.
The look in his chill blue eyes was feral. She flinched.
"What
sort of deal?"
"Surely
you're old enough to know," Percy replied. He nodded to his goons,
who easily lifted and moved Anna along by the arms. He made his way
up the stairs, the three following him. They got out onto the wet street,
where a sedan with darkened windows was waiting. Percy opened the door
to the rear seat, and Anna was unceremoniously shoved in. Derek and
Robert got in the front, while Percy slipped into the back with Anna.
The car accelerated quickly, throwing Anna against the side door as
it took the next corner. Percy merely smiled at her obvious discomfort.
"Where
are we going?" she asked nervously, trying not to fidget.
"If
you're lucky," Percy said coldly, "it'll be some place that
you'll get some gear." The look in his eyes was chill, and Anna
moved as far away from him as she could, keeping quiet. It wouldn't
do to get him angrier than he already was.
