Sam Gerard was late to a meeting with his boss. It had been almost a year since the death of Noah Newman. Sam had misgivings about replacing him. He knew that they had planned to replace him with a woman. He had only heard good things about her. Sam raced up the steps of the Federal Building in Chicago, Illinois. He made it to her office with only minutes to spare.
"Good Morning Sam. I thought you weren't going to make it in time." Said Cathrine Walsh, a pretty mid forties blonde with brown eyes.
"Good Morning Cathrine. Well what do you have for me today?" Said Sam trying hard to smile.
"I know the last year has been really hard on you loosing Noah. I have found a replacement for him. It’s time Sam. You need another person on your Warrants Squad. She is a fine example of what the Marshal Service stands for. She's a fellow Texan. She was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. She went to school there and graduated with honors from South Side High in 1982. She enlisted in the Air Force upon graduation from high school. She excelled there working her way through the enlisted ranks ending up a Master Sergeant. She was in The Gulf War both Desert Shield and Desert Storm, with a Special Forces unit. She was decorated 3 times. She holds the Congressional Medal of Honor. A Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with clusters.
She saved her commanding officer when she took a bullet meant for him. She then was sent to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Co. She earned her commission in only 3 years. She was then sent to Bosnia, and did some duty in Kosovo. She retired last January from the Air Force, a Major. She didn't have a choice but to leave the military. She has borderline Diabetes Type II. It was under control but she lost her flying status because of it. The Air Force still wanted her but with the condition she has it was impossible for her to stay in. We took her knowing that in advance, and because of her record. She keeps a good eye on it and right now it looks like it might reverse itself.
"Whew! And you are giving this kid to me? Her name is Danielle Elizabeth Little Elk right? He said scratching his head looking at her picture in her Daciier.
"Yes. That's right. She is half Cherokee Indian. Her mother is white. I shopped around for this one. She has been in the Marshal Service since last year. I had to give you a winner to replace the one you lost." Said Cathrine.
"I only hope she does as good a job as Noah did. I sure miss that kid." Said Sam sadly.
"I know you do Sam. Would you like to meet her? She drove in last night. She's been working out in the gym." Said Cathrine.
"Sure, let me go get the rest of the kids and we will all go meet her." Said Sam.
Sam went into the conference room were the rest of his Warrants Squad was.
"Listen up. We have a new member of the Squad, Major Danielle Little Elk. Here is a copy of her daciier. Read it folks and weep we have a live one this time." Said Sam.
"Sammy she was in the Special Forces in the Air Force. She must be a real tough broad." Said Cosmo Renfro.
"Look at the picture." Said smilsmiling.
"She doesn't look that old. Can't tell much from a black and white copy." Said Cosmo.
"It's about time you got another woman. I have been the only hen in the rooster house." Said Savanna Cooper.
"She must be real military like." Said Bobby Biggs.
"Well kids, let’s go and see. She is down in the Gym." Said Sam leading the way.
"Follow the Big Dog. Woof!" Said Biggs as usual.
They all went into the gym. There was a beautiful dark haired woman on the mat with John Bartlett doing some Karate. People were watching as she proceeded to kick his ass. Bartlett was no small fellow and he was evenly matched with her having his 3rd degree black belt as well as Little Elk. She flipped him and sat on him astraddle. She had beaten him. She got up off him and bowed to him. She looked up to 5 more people watching her.
"Good morning Ma'am. Dani Little Elk reporting for duty." She said coming to attention.
"Good Morning Dani. This is your supervisor, Superintendent US Deputy Marshal Sam Gerard and his Warrants Squad.” Cathrine said introducing them.
"Pleased to meet you sir." Said Dani going into an “at ease”.
"No, the pleasure is ours. That was some demonstration Major." Said Sam smiling and offering her his hand.
"You can call me Dani. Sir." She said sweetly grasping his hand and giving a firm handshake.
"These are my kids. Cosmo Renfro, Savanna Cooper, and Bobby Biggs." Said Sam as she extended her hand to all of them.
"Pleased to meet y’all." She said with a distinct Texas drawl.
"You were with the military police were you not?” Said Cathrine.
"Yes. I started my military carrier there." Said Dani.
"You did quite a lot of ordinance and weapons work in the Gulf." Said Sam.
"Yes, I also put out fires on the Kuwaiti oil fields." Said Dani.
"You have a very impressive daciier." Said Cosmo.
"Thank you. " Said Dani giving Renfro a smile.
"We are in the middle of a case Dani and we are about to make a bust. If you want to you can join us. We leave at 10am." Said Sam.
&"I'"I'll be there." Said Dani smiling at Sam.
She left to go and clean up for the bust.
"Whew! That is what I call a handful." Said Sam.
"No Sammy, that is two handfuls." Said Cosmo.
"Now Cosmo, we don't want any sexual harassment suites here. Watch yourself." Said Cathrine.
"Yes Ma'am." said Cosmo.
"Your right, I bet she is." Said Biggs.
"I sure would hate to find her in a dark alley." Said Cosmo to Biggs.
She showered and dressed. It was the first of August and it was hot. She wore a e tae tank top and a pair of 501 Button Fly jeans, a wide brown belt, a denim shirt and a pair of brown dingo boots. She walked down the hall to the conference room. Sam saw her standing in the door and ushered her in. He was taken aback by her transformation. She was a beautiful woman under that entire military exterior. She had beautiful light brown eyes boarding on hazel and her skin was not as dark as you would think. She had lovely chestnut shoulder length hair parted at the right side and layered and a body that just wouldn't quite. Sam felt a twinge of excitement as she walked by him leaving just a hint of her perfume in the air.
"Well, were all here. Better brief Dani on the bust that is fixin’' to go down." Said Sam.
Dani took an empty chair next to Cosmo.
"Your first name is Cosmo isn't it?” She asked.
"Yes. You are Dani right." He said friendly but not much interested.
All the men had notice that she cleaned up well, Sam most of all.
"Seems our boys are in a bar on the south side. We will have to go in with the intention of taking them alive." Said Sam.
"No guns? Asked Dani.
"Yes. But shoot to wound." He said.
"They must want these boys bad." Said Dani.
"Just your ordinary Judge killers." Said Cosmo.
"They sound like really bad mothers." Said Dani.
"Yes Dani they are.” Said Savanna. “They killed a federal judge sent him a letter bomb.”
“So there just might be some ordinance where they are?” Asked Dani.
“Could be. We will have to be watchful of it. I figure you know it when you see it Dani.” Said Sam.
“You bet I’ll be mindful of it.” Said Dani.
“Let’s get packed up and do this.” said Sam. “Cosmo, you and DanI go in first and scope things out.”
So they loaded up for the bust. Cosmo and Dani took a POS Chevy and got there first. They had to make sure that the boys were still there. Dani had a Beretta 9mm pistol. It was a Cheetah 86. And for her backup she wore a Colt Mustang Pocketlite. Cosmo and Dani sat watching for any sign of their boys.
There were three of them. Cousins. Jake, Mitch and Paul Hubert. They had escaped the County lock up in Joliet. Paul Hubart was wanted in connection with a bomb threat at the Federal Court House in Joliet. The rest had made the letter bomb that killed the judge. And for postal fraud for sending it.
"Whew Cosmo! We got our work cut out for us. If tare are bomb makers they have a crazy streak in them " She said.
' "Yeah so just be careful. That‘s impressive you know about that stuff." Said Cosmo as he looked at her.
"Thanks." Said Dani. "So how long you been in law enforcement?"
"I was a cop first then went into the Marshal Service." Said Cosmo. "Close to 15 years in the Marshal Service."
"That‘s cool. It‘s nice to work with people that know their job." She said and without another word she saw them.
"Cosmo, they're still in there." She said. Cosmo radioed to Sam they were still there.
Dani clicked a round into the chamber of her Berretta.
"We are going to move in. These guys are real slime just watch it. "Said Cosmo.
"Thanks." She said giving him a weak smile.
Cosmo watched her move closer to the bar. She was the quietest in her pursuit he had ever seen. Special Forces had trained Dani well. He walked beside her. She was only a few inches shorter than him. He had noticed the tattoo on her left shoulder a dagger with wings and some sort of star. She also had several piercing in her left ear with an ear clip. Cosmo thought she was a little too biker chic for him, however; she did carry her weapon in the same hand he did. .
"Southpaw?" He asked her. She looked at his gun hand.
"Southpaw. Cool!" She said giving him a sweet smile in recognition.
Cosmo had made it a habit to watch her since meeting her a few hours ago. Cosmo always had his eyes open. Observation was one of his gifts, it had served the Warrants Squad well over the 15 years he had been with them.
She really was two handfuls. She had ditched the denim shirt she wore only a white cotton tank top. It was just this side of good taste of being too tight. Her jeans were the same way. But what really got him was fac fact she had a set on her that wouldn't quite and a mouth to die for, full lips. That was cause for distraction. She had a feminine muscular build it was certain that she could kick his ass if she wanted to. That little fact, in it self is what made Cosmo weary of her. But Cosmo was wrong this time about Dani Little Elk.
Biggs kicked the door in Sam yelled US Marshals Freeze! But did that stop the boys? theythey started a fight that was getting out of hand fast. Dani had already put handcuffs on Jake. But not before he rigged explosives. He had only to push a button on the old Wurlitzer jukebox. Dani had not been watching him as he did this. She had taken a running leap and knocked him down and that had knocked him out. Then she proceeded to helggs ggs get Mitch into a pair himself. Mitch was 6'2" and a real bruiser. However, Mitch picked her up and threw her in the direction of Cosmo. Knocking him down and they rolled into a corner having landed with her on top of him. It was an awkward moment that you tell your kids about later, after you marry the girl. Cosmo looked at the woman astraddle of him.
"Geese Dani, you are wrinkling my Armani jacket. " He said quickly pushing her off him, but managing tlp hlp her off the floor by extending his left hand.
Dani looked at the man she had just rolled with. He had a big thing about his clothes. She didn't particularly like that. "A damned peacock." She thought.
She rushed Mitch again; this time he pitched her again toward Sam. She and Sam went sailing over the bar and he landed on top of her in back of the bar, right between her legs. Talk about embarrassing situations! Sam was in one up to his butt. Their faces were inches apart, close enough to kiss.
"Are you alright Sir?" She asked looking up at the man laying on top of her and smiling at him. Her arms were around his neck. She thought it wasn't that unpleasant a situation. Something wassiassing between them. Something special.
Sam looked down at her with all the innocents of a little boy. He was a bit shaken up. He shook his head and tried to get his bearings back. It took him some time to come to his scenes. He knew where he was in the next moment it embarrassed him a little but, the position he found himself in wasn't unpleasant he thought.
"I'm just fine. Are you ok?" He said smiling at her. When he got up he accidentally left a handprint on her left breast. It was an honest and innocent move. He had extended his hand to help her up off the dirty floor.
"Thanks Sir. I'm just fine.” She said taking his hand as he helped her up.
"Good, let's get those boys." Said Sam.
Dani got a good half nelson on Mitch this time with Biggs slapping the cuffs on him. Cooper had gotten Paul into handcuffs already.
Dani looked around at the bar she felt danger again. Her War feeling she called it. She began to look harder. Then she spied wires coming out of the old Wurlitzer jukebox. She ran over to it and looked it over. Her keen scence of danger began to hit her like a ton of bricks. The jukebox was geared to explode!
"Sir we have a big problem!" Yelled Dani.
"What is it Dani?" Asked Sam.
"This juke box is rigged to explode." She said.
"Everyone out now!" Yelled Sam. "You too Dani."
"No, sir. It will take out half the block and there is not time to call the bomb squad. There is a school just down the way. It will take it out." She said.
"You were in ordinance weren't you? You know how to defuse it?" Asked Sam.
"Yeah, we have 12 minutes before it goes up it looks like." She said walking out the bar door.
"Were are you going?" He asked walking with her.
"To get my kit, in my pursenevenever leave home with out it." Said Dani diving into her purse. She ran back to the bar and began her work.
"I will stay with you." Said Sam.
"No, sir. I can do this alone. Just call the bomb squad to dispose of it." Said Dani.
"Cosmo, call the bomb squad. Get you and the rest of the Squad out of here. I will stay with Dani." Said Sam. Cosmo did as he was told. He had heard that they had less than 12 minutes to defuse it.
"Sir, there is no reason to stay." She said taking the front off of the jukebox.
"Yes, you are the reason. I never leave one of my kids to fend for themselves." He said as she worked diligently, quickly and gingerly on the bomb. It was one of the ones with two chambers and a detonator. Snip the wrong wire and it was all over. She took her wire snips and sniped the red one but it still counted down.
"Shit, there has to be another back up switch. We are running out of time!" She said.
She looked over the device and found the backup wire and snipped it. As she did Sam put his hand on her shoulder and they both healed their breaths. She snipped it just as the digital clock got to 5 seconds. It stopped and the light in it went out.
"Damn woman! You did it!" He said hugging her.
"I did, didn’t I!” She said returning his embrace.
"I didn't have any doubts you could Dani. I read that decider of yours." Said Sam now looking at her with his arms still around her.
They looked at each other at close range. They were sitting on the floor. They were just about to kiss each other as Cosmo came in.
"The bomb squad is here." Said Cosmo looking at Sam and Dani still sitting on the floor. They got up quickly when he came in. But they looked at each other and smiled.
"She did it, defused the damn thing just like that." Said Sam to Cosmo.
"Looks like to me she did more than that." Said Cosmo looking at Sam's expression. He had seen them in an embrace.
"Oh, you know how it is, saved from death and sometimes you get carried away." Said Dani trying to dismiss to Cosmo what had truly gone on.
"Yeah, I know." said Cosmo not buying any of it.
The bomb squad finished her job. They disposed of it safely.
The bust was finally done. Cosmo, Dani and Sam none the worse for wear.
They were all disheveled their clothes were dirty and Dani's white tank top had a hand print about the size of Sam's hand on her left breast.
Sam looked at Dani and said." Dani I think we all need a hosing off." He saw the handprint and realized that it was his. It was too big for Cosmo's.
"Yes, we look a mess." Said Dani dusting herself off a bit.
Cosmo noticed the handprint on her tank top. He looked at his hands and they were dirty. The handprint wasn't his. He figured it was Sam's.
"Sammy I think you have some 'splaninin' to do." He said looking and pointing at Dani's tank top.
Sam looked at the handprint and shook his head in embarrassment.
"I'm really sorry Dani. I didn't know I had done that." He said apologetically.
"I know you didn't mean too. Don't worry about it Sir." She said trying to wipe the handprint off.
"Sam you dog, what have you done to that poor girl?” Said Cooper teasing Sam.
"It was an accident." Said Sam protesting a little.
"Accidentally on purpose." Said Biggs looking at the handprint and laughing.
"When you are tossed in the air and go flying no telling where things will end up.” Said Dani. She was taking the whole thing as what it had been, an accident and very good naturally. "Really it was an accident."
"I suppose you and Cosmo need to go and clean up. We have it all taken care of." Said Sam. " Go on. You did some mighty fine work here today Dani. Saved a lot of lives." Sam was proud of her. Immensely proud of her.
"Dani I will give you a lift home if you want to chance the hazard." Said Cosmo in a rather uncaused tone.
"Sure why not. There isn't much more that we can do to each other." She said as innocently as possible.
The remainder of the Warrants Squad went Whoooa. Including Sam.
"Well there isn't." Said Cosmo. "Look at my Armani jacket, she wrinkled the living shit out of it.
They climbed into the POS Chevy.
"So were do you live?” He asked trying to be a bit friendlier. As that was Cosmo's real way.
"South side. It is all I could find on short notice. "She said." I hate it."
"That is a bad part of town. I would definitely find another place if I was you." Said Cosmo.
"Do you have any suggestions?" She asked.
"There is a vacancy in my building. Would you like for me to see if it is rented yet? It is just down the hall from me." Said Cosmo.
"Could you? I would be grateful for that. I don't know anyone here in Chicago." She said sweetly.
"Sorry to hear that. It can be lonely without friends." Said Cosmo warming up a bit.
"Yeah, I know what you are thinking Cosmo. I look like something out of a biker movie. That I am a tough woman. Maybe a little on the trashy side. Well, that just isn't true. I have a soft side. I dress like this because for 20 years I wore a uniform that would not allow me to have three peicings in one ear." She said almost as if she had read his mind.
"That's right. You were in the military." Said Cosmo a little sorry he had first thought that of her.
"And when I got out I went a little wild." Said Dani.
"I can understand that. Don't worry Dani." Said Cosmo softening even more. "That was some bit of bomb work you did. Sam's right you saved a lot of lives today.""Just doing what I was taught to do. I'm so sorry about your jacket. I will have it cleaned and pressed for you send me the bill." She said.
"Don't worry about that I like to bitch about my clothes. I wear designer things and I like to look sharp. I shouldn't have wore this today." He said beginning to think he had her all wrong. "We sure did make a scene at the bust all of us."
"You know I landed on you with quite a bit of force I could have hurt you." She said.
"You knocked the wind out of me." Said Cosmo.
"I did?" Said Dani with a gasp.
"Yeah. I thought for a minute that you had hit something else but you hadn’t." He said.
"That's good. At least you can have kids someday." She said letting her good nature show through.
"I'm not married." He said giving her one of his contagious smiles finally.
"I'm not either." She said returning it.
"Yeah, where too now?” He asked as he began to get comfortable with her.
Dani Little Elk had that effect. She was an open person. Mostly because of her raising.
"Are you nervous Cosmo?" She asked.
"A little. But you seem easy to talk to. " He said.
"Is is because I am a woman or is it because of my record." She asked candidly.
"Little of both I guess. You have to admit you have done some impressive stuff. Not unlike what you did today." Said Cosmo.
"Well, I won't bite. If I do then I have had all my shots." She said trying to make him laugh and he did.
"Where did you get that tattoo?" He asked.
"It was a dare from my Captain. All the men in the squad got one, I had to get roaring drunk to get it. It's not a fond memory it hurt like hell!" She said.
"This it?" He asked driving into the apartment building.
"Yeah, this is it.” She said. "Why don't you come up and have a diet coke?" She said. "It wont take me long to change."
"Got any beer?" He asked.
"No, can't have it." She said.
"No Beer?" He asked.
"I have Diabetes." She said.
"Ouch! Shots I hate them." He said.
"No, I have the other kind. I just watch what I eat and monitor my blood sugar. I about got it beat." She said.
"I'll come up and wait on ya." He said.
"Ok." She said as they got out of the POS Chevy.
"Why did you leave the service? If it isn't too personal." He asked.
"I lost my flight status. The diabetes was enough that I couldn't fly anymore. I felt useless and they agreed that I was virtually. They let me go reluctantly. With full benefits." She said.
"You flew a plane?" He asked.
"I was a naviguessor. Sorry Navigator." She said. "I flew sometimes."
"What haven't you done!”? He asked.
"Medical. I only know Chinese medicine. Sensei taught me Acupuncture." She said unlocking the door.
"Needles, Ouch again. I hate them." He said.
"I think that is why my diabetes is going into remission." She said.
"You’re using that?" He asked.
"Yes. I do it myself." She said going into the bedroom and closing the door a crack.
"Needles." He said under his breath and shaking his head.
"Help yourself to something to drink." She said poking her head out for a moment.
Cosmo looked around the dingy little apartment. It was defiantly not the place he would have picked. Cosmo loved order and nice things. Dani had neither. But that was the way she grew up. Poor in South Dallas. Were drugs were bought and sold and gunfire was a daily event. Cosmo had grown up in Aurora Ill. in a neighborhood out of Wayne's World. He had been the son of the police chief. He had managed to cause trouble as a teen but had grown out of it.
He looked at Dani's things. The medals and awards. Then he saw the Purple Heart. He wondered what she had to endure to get it. He also saw the picture of her and President Bush. She had the Congressional Medal of Honor around her neck. Dani was impressive.
He took a swig of diet coke and just about gagged. No beer. Oh well, he was on duty. He sat on the couch and waited for her. She came out in a black tank top and some more Levis flare bottoms. Those boots looked worn and old. But had new heels and soles.
"You ready, we can stop by your place and get you cleaned up. I am sorry for the mess I got in late last night and I haven't had time to unpack yet." She said.
"I figured as much." He said getting up off the couch.
"You ready." He asked putting the diet coke in the waste can.
"Always." She said.
Cosmo looked at her. She was beautiful. Why had he not noticed that before? He liked her already. She was funny and charming and had a good nature. Not every woman would have laugh at him tumbling around with him. It had been an accident and all but he had enjoyed it. Deep down. Even if she had wrecked his jacket. She was after all a beautiful woman.
They drove to his place and it was by far nicer than hers. He had a one bedroom on the west side. In a lovely apartment building.
"Nice place. So you think the apartment is still open?" She asked.
"We can check. Dani if I were you, I would get outta there. It isn't a nice neighborhood." He said.
"Well, how much is an apartment here?" She said.
"About $650 a month excluding electric." He said.
"I suppose I can afford that." She said as they walked up the stairs.
"You getting' hungry?" He asked.
"Starved." She said.
"Let me change and we will go grab something somewhere." He said.
"You’re asking me to lunch?" She asked kind of on the shocked side. She didn't think that he liked her.
"If you want we can go Dutch." He said trying not to push the issue.
"That would be fine with me." She said as he went into the bedroom.
"Italian ok with you?" He asked from the bedroom the door was closed a bit.
She got up and went just outside the closed door.
"I couldn't hear you Cosmo." She said.
"I asked you if you liked Italian." He said.
"Sure. I did some duty there. I love the food. I was stationed off the Amalfi Coast." She said as he opened the door and flashed her one of his contagious smiles. She couldn't help herself. She returned the smile.
"You should do that more often Dani." He said.
"What?" She said.
"Smile." He said doing it again.
"Cosmo you are a card. I like that in a guy." She said as he took a moment at the doorway. .
"Good we will get along fine Dani." He said still smiling with a pleasant open look on his face.
"So you ready?" He asked getting his keys.
"Always." She said.
"What was that?" He said asking her about her response.
"It's my pat answer. I stay ready for anything and everything. " She said. He laughs a little.
"You know you ought to be careful with that. It don't leave much for a guy not to think about." He said. "You are kind of funny yourself." He said in a mock fatherly tone.
"So I'm funny?" She asked.
"Good natured. Funny and prettier than I first thought." He said.
"Why thank you. Sah." She said in a mock southern drawl.
"Well I suppose that is good isn't it." He said as they drove off.
They ate at Sergio’s. Cosmo knew the owner and they got a good table outside. It was a lovely day.
"Cosmo this is a lovely place. You really do have good taste." She said a lot impressed.
"I admit I have been accused of being a clothes horse and I do spend on quality." He said.
"Well, I suppose I should tell you. I grew up in South Dallas. We didn't have much and it is hard for me to spend instead of save." She said.
