Chapter 1 – The Jump
Captain Jack Sparrow stood proudly at the helm of The Black Pearl. She was finally his again, after years of trailing behind Barbossa and his pack of miscreant and mangy pirates that had marooned him, Captain Jack Sparrow, on a deserted island some ten years ago. And finally with the luck of a god, he had stumbled upon the very thing to Barbossa’s undoing young: William Turner, namesake to the late Bootstrap Bill Turner. With the boy’s blood, he had been able to break the curse that held the mangy group of pirates within its grasp; thus being able to kill Barbossa. All he had to do in return was to help rescue the boy’s bonnie lass Elizabeth from Barbossa and his crew.
Looking back to the cliff from where he had just jumped after his rescue, Jack was pained to see young Will swarmed by Commodore Norrington’s soldiers. Elizabeth no longer stood at the boy’s side, where she had been only moments before when Jack was still up there, with them. Swallowing a lump in his throat, Jack knew that the boy would pay dearly for his actions today; probably with his life.
Will’s pardons would no longer stand: He was a true pirate now. He had helped a wanted man escape from the gallows, in Norrington’s eyes, that could not be over looked, especially since it had been a pirate captain that Will had helped. Such crimes could not, and would not, go unpunished.
Jack knew that he should stick to the pirate’s code: Every pirate to him self; those who fell behind were left behind. But he just couldn’t seem to do it. Jack cursed himself; he had grown fond of the boy, attached even, and he wasn’t about to let Norrington kill the whelp off.
“Avast ye dogs! Load the canons and aim ‘em at the fort!”
His crew hurried off to do their Captain’s bidding, except the first mate Mr. Gibbs. “Captain” he started warily.
Jack spun around with an angry look on his face “I gave an order, savvy” What is it ye be wanting?”
“The code. Captain…”
“The code is more like guidelines, I will not be leaving Will to Norrington’s hate, savvy? We’re going to bring him with us.”
Jack quickly took off his hat, coat and the rest of his effects, dropping them all on the deck next to the helm. “FIRE!” Jack yelled right before he jumped into the water and started to swim to the bottom of the cliff to help young Will make it back to the Pearl in one piece.
Just as Jack suspected the canon fire was all the distraction Will needed to get away from Norrington’s men and be able to jump off the cliff into the water. As the boy splashed into the water, Jack swam over to where he had landed, and dove down into the depths of the water to help him along, as the royal navy would soon be hot on their trail for blowing a hole in their fort. Grabbing Will, Jack kicked to the surface and began to drag the boy back to the Pearl. As they came up along side, a rope was thrown down to them. Jack decided for insurance that he would tie the rope to Will and just hang on himself.
As he moved to do so Will stopped him. “Jack what are you doing? I can hang on.”
“I don’t want you falling back into the water, mate. You can do it the manly way later, savvy?”
Will groaned but allowed Jack to have his way of things.
With a great big pull, provided by the crew, Jack and Will flew through the air and landed safely onboard the deck of the Pearl.
Leaving Will to sit dripping on the deck, Jack headed back to the helm, retaking his place as captain. “Alright ye dogs, hoist the anchor and prepare to sail! Blastedy wiy will be after us soon. We best be putting space between us.” Will watched Jack in amusement for a moment before he started to get up to find something to do to help. He got about half way up when a sharp voice stopped him in his tracks. “WILL!” Jack hollered, from his place at the helm. “What’cha be thinking you be doing, whelp? You best be sitting down there by your onsies and stay there. One stupid act is enough for the day, Savvy?”
“Jack…. I….”Will sta, no, not really sure what to say, but feeling he should say something.
“Captain!” Jack interrupted. “Captain Jack if you please, whelp, and don’t go forgetting it. You be onboard the Pearl now, so you will do as I say! I will not be taking no favorites, mate!” Jack glared at Will, sighing. Will dropped back down onto the deck and leaned back against the rail.
*******
Despite the warm Caribbean sun, Will began to sliver from lack of movement, plus the fact that he was still soaked to the skin from his swim earlier in the day. If only he could just get up for a minute and move about, but he knew Jack would surely yell at him again if he were to even move a muscle. Groaning Will leaned back on the rail once again and closed his eyes, biting his lower lip to keep his teeth from chattering.
At the helm, Jack watched Will. The boy was undoubtedly frozen to the bone, since he himself was still slightly chilled but now mostly dry from the warm wind. The boy on the other hand was sitting down there on the deck, out of the wind and now, from the position of the Pearl, he was no longer in the sun.
As he watched, Jack began to wonder where his concern came from. As a pirate, Jack had always tried to keep a distance between himself and those around him, never letting the members of his crew become more important to him than they already were as part of the Pearl’s crew. Yet with the boy, he felt something more: Something gentle; something he had never felt before, nor wanted to feel again.
Looking behind them, Port Royal was but a speck on the horizon. Taking out a spyglass, Jack scanned the water for the royal navy ships that were soon to be on his tail. Seeing none as of yet, Jack sighed in relief. If and when the time came, he would engage only if he had to. No ship in the Caribbean could outlast one of the Black Pearls attacks, but he just wasn’t in the mood to chance it. Not so soon after winning the Pearl back. Glancing at Will one more time, Jack saw that there were other things he had to take care of as well. Jack called Gibbs to take over the Helm. “Mate I be wanting to know, if you be seein’ anything,” Jack ordered with a swish of his hand.
“Aye Captain.”
Bending down Jack picked up his effects that were still piled on the deck, placing his hat upon his head and his jacket around his shoulders. His weapons stayed in his left hand. He headed toward his cabin. As he passed by Will, he reached out and grabbed the boy by the scruff of his neck, then proceeded to drag him to his feet before pushing him towards the Captain’s quarters.
Once inside the cabin, Jack let go of Will’s neck and walked across the room, opening a trunk that sat at the end of the bed. He began to rummage through it. Will looked around, unsure of what he should do. With a sigh, Jack pulled a blanket out of the trunk. “Alright luv, take your cloths off and wrap up in this. Best do it before you be getting sick.” Jack said as he tossed the blanket at Will.
Turning around, Jack looked around the room, muttering curses about how Barbossa had gotten rid of his stuff, and what he would do to the man if he weren’t already dead. Storming out of the cabin, Jack headed to the helm. “We be needing to go shopping mate.”
Gibbs nodded. He understood the Captain’s stress. Barbossa and his crew of misfit bloodthirsty pirates had gotten rid of all the comforts of the black Pearl, and of what was left onboard, even the dirty pirates didn’t want to touch. “Aye Captain.”
Nodding, Jack headed towards the galley to get some food for himself and the whelp, and hopefully some rum as well.
Still inside the cabin, Will had stripped like Jack had told him, and had wed ued up in the thin blanket. The blanket didn’t hold that much more warmth, but at least he was out of his wet cloths. Taking a seat on the edge of Jack’s bed, Will looked around the cabin. His thoughts turned to the morning, and what was he doing out here. He was a blacksmith, for crying out loud! He was no more a pirate then Jack was a saint. His father may have been a pirate but… His thoughts where interrupted as Jack barged into the room holding a le ble bottles of rum in one hand, and a platter of food in the other. Setting his cargo down on the desk, Jack turned to Will, who had jumped to his feet and now stood near the desk.
The boy looked tense and out of place. Shaking his head, Jack handed Will a bottle of rum before taking a swig out of his own. “You’ll bunk with the crew, savvy?”
“Whatever.” Replied Will, as he took a swig out of his bottle of rum.
“Gibbs and Ana Marie will show you the ropes. Stick with them, and do us a favor: Don’t go doing anything stupid.”
Will heard Jack, but decided against replying with words. He nodded before swallowing some more rum. Will wanted to forget. He wanted the day to end, and for him to wake up and find that it was all a dream. He had loved Elizabeth, but in the end she had helped Jack escape and then she had turned on him, planning on marrying the commodore even after he had confessed his love to her.
Will knew in his head that he had made the right choice earlier that day, he he had jumped off the cliff into the water; when he had jumped to Jack, however rash it may have been. His heart still belonged to Elizabeth, or at least he thought that it did. He was so confused: His life had changed so drastically in the last few hours!
Sitting down in a chair by the desk, Will drank more rum, before looking over ack. ck. The pirate Captain was well on his way to being drunk: Over half his bottle of rum was already gone. Sighing, Will turned his head away. Jack was another problem all together: The pirate had grown on him, and he liked the pirate more than he should.
Jack stood swaying on his feet…even more than he usually did. Heading towards his bunk, the pirate Captain collapsed on the soft mattress, and promptly passed out. Unsure what to do, Will stayed where he was and coned ted to nurse the rum out of the bottle, no longer bothering to keep his eyes off of Jack.
Will desperately wanted to touch Jack, but that wasn’t possible. He would wake the slumbering pirate, and then he would have to explain his actions. So instead, Will watched Jack. He watched the rise and fall of each breath, and made a mental picture of the innocence that Jack’s face held as he slept.
Will watched Jack for some time before his head started to feel much too heavy for his body, and it became incredibly hard to keep it upright. Feeling sick, he placed his head in his hands and closed his eyes, trying to remember to breathe, as his world slowly grew darker and darker and he passed out.
Jack woke sometime later, his head now clear. Looking around, he was extremely happy to see that he was still onboard the Pearl, and that it hadn’t been some awful dream. And he wasn’t in fact still on that blasted island out in the middle of the ocean. Glancing around the room, his eyes fell on a slumbering form. Young William Turner was passed out with his head in his hands, the effects of too much rum.
Chuckling, Jack reached down and picked the boy up into his arms. Wills head rolled to the side and came to rest on the pirate Captain’s shoulder. He mumbled something unintelligent in his sleep, causing Jack to smile. Jack carried the boy carefully to his bunk so as not to wake him, and placed him down on the soft mattress. Pulling the covers back, Jack slipped the blankets up around Wills slight form and tucked him in. Unable to resist, Jack reached down and smoothed Wills curls out of his face.
“Rest, my young friend for tomorrow you will be needing your strength.” Touching Will’s face one last time Jack left the cabin.
